“That’s So 2012″…

While I was putting on my makeup a few weekend’s back for a wedding and trying to help Mark with the finishing touches to his Best Man speech and sew up a loose hem all at the same time I realised that the makeup I was attempting to apply on my face was reminiscent of my tastes from two years ago. I know, so deep Anna. It was more bronzey than usual, a little lighter on the eye than I’ve been going recently and sheer and more nudey on the lip. I mean I wasn’t regressing to my overly orange/porn lip days of CHANEL Soleil Tan de CHANEL and GOSH Darling, it was like a slightly less ‘in yer face’ version of that and since that realisation I’ve been making a conscious effort in the morning to explore that old beauty path a bit more as I thought things turned out ok on that day.

The 2012 VDM look was a threefold process. One part equal measures of bronzer and blush on the cheeks, one part a lightly metallic eye, finished with a sprinkling of a nude lip. So let’s start with the complexion. If I remember rightly, 2012 was the year that Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12hr Blush in Tipsy came into my life and man was that a game changer. To date it’s still my favourite blush of all time and it just has this almost mystical ability to make me look healthy, perky and well, just a less grey version of myself. So I’ve been reaching for that with with NARS Bronzer in Laguna, which was in full-time rotation back then, or Soap & Glory’s Solar Powder which is a newer and more subtle way to warm things up.

For eyes there’s an obvious choice – MAC Eyeshadow in All That Glitters – a shade that I wore pretty solidly from 2011-2012. There are a few others in that pinky/golden vein too that get a look in: NARS Eyeshadow in Nepal, Estรฉe Lauder Pure Colour Stay-On Shadow Paint in Pink Zinc and Urban Decay’s Sin from the Naked Palette. All have that metallic quality that disguise tired eyes and provide a standout backdrop for lashes (taken care of by my old friend L’Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara).

Then there’s the lip. In the past you could bet your bottom dollar that it was MAC Hue that I was rocking, a colour that I quickly worked into a tiny little nub, but actually it’s a lippie that my lovely friend Sandra sent over from Canada that’s been ticking all the right boxes. Wet and Wild’s Mega Last Matte Lip Colour in Just Peachy is the one and it’s like a less white-based version of Illamasqua’s Obey.I pat it on over pre-balmed lips and my makeup time travel back to 2012 is complete.

  • They are all such great products though, I love Tarte blushes!

    xx Sierra

  • This is so funny! I was exactly the same in 2011-2012. I wore the L’Oreal Infallible pigment shadows, the Hourglass Beige one religiously.

  • As much as progressing is good, at least these products are standing the test of time. The Tarte blush is such a pretty shade, too.

It’s nice to look back and see what products were hyped a few years ago. I can hold my hand up and admit I was part of the Gosh Darling crew! ๐Ÿ™‚ – That lipstick looked awful on me, I can’t believe I went out wearing it! Cringe!

  • wow I remember em days!! It’s always nice to look back at all the products that were hyped a few years ago might do something like this on my blog

  • Lovely products! x

I agree – we often date and discard products well before they’ve served us fully. Reinventing new uses is half the fun of makeup!

  • Emma and Emily

I love so many of these products too. I have the tarte blush in exposed, and I can’t seem to make it work for me, it looks a little too ‘done’ on my cheeks for some reason! Maybe I should try tipsy!

Wow! 2012 for me probably means Bobbi Brown everything. Vanilla on the lids, espresso along lashline, tawny on cheeks and raisin on the lip. Have diversified quite considerably since then!

  • This look is still my go-to aha! Also, I wish I could get my hands on Tarte’s Tipsy, it looks gorgeous:)

These look like they are just the perfect look for summer glowy skin and so easy to do. Will definitely be trying this combination out myself and giving into ordering a couple tarte blushers!

  • Tipsy will always be one of faves as well, and you can’t go past ATG!

  • Looks like such a great collection of products, especially that blush … beautiful!

  • Oh I was all about the black eyeliner in 2012. So glad that era has passed.

  • I am STILL loving Naked1!

  • i love the soap & glory bronzer, i’ve yet to try NARS laguna!

  • Love NAKED 1 the colours are so easy to wear, and since 2012 not much has changed make-up wise really (i still have the products I used then oooops) MAC Studio Fix Fluid, Maybelline Mascara, MAC Skinfinish Bronzer in Dark/Medium to contour, MAC blush or Benefit Coralista.
Now I have more MAC lippies, primer and a lot of liners – always love the natural vibe they give off though

  • Whoa, Tipsy came out so long ago? I’ve heard you talk about it so much I didn’t even realize! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Every Day In Grace

  • I have found myself going back to maybe my 2010 days. I went through a two year phaze of experimenting with eyeshadow + lip colors but I think I suit what I had been doing all along before all that. with a few updates etc but really I’m all about neutral eyes with either bronzey or nude eyeshadow or none at all + liquid liner. a decent amount of bronzer/blush/highlighter + a nude or pink lip. whenever I see pics of me going for fuschia or orange lips I just think it’s not really me. I still try those things occasionally but I’m glad I’ve gone back to OG Annie circa 2010.

(longest comment ever award goes to… probably not me, but good effort nonetheless)

  • Love all of these products! The NARS laguna bronzer, naked palette, MAC eyeshadows, they’re all staple makeup items ๐Ÿ™‚ Oldies but goodies!

  • So in love with your blog! you’ve inspired me to start my own – thank you for always being genuine, humble and yourself!!

VDM circa 2012 still sounds pretty good to me! The Naked palettes will never get old.

  • I own that Tarte blush! I begged one of my friends to bring it back for me from America when she went. I’d love to try more Tarte stuff, especially their foundation, but I’d be worried to order it because the shade might not be right! SUCH DILEMMA!

I’m so in love with the Naked palette and the Nars eyeshadow just has me mesmerized by it. I also wish that Tarte was easier to access in the UK, but as always, great post Anna

To be honest, its hard to believe 2012 was 2 years ago! Eek. Nothing wrong with a bit of MAC Hue either!

I just had a moment of, “Wow, 2012. That was a whole two years ago!” And then it sank in: 2015 is getting really, really close. Soon it will be 2015… and I still don’t own Tipsy!

  • Can’t go wrong with any of these picks! Think the Naked Palette will forever be my top pick ๐Ÿ™‚

  • What a cute idea for a post! ๐Ÿ™‚ Reading it I was trying to remember what I was wearing in 2012–and I realized I can barely remember what I did that year! (and it was only 2 years ago!) Yikes! Time flies

That Wet and Wild lippie looks awesome.

  • I have to say, I’m guilty of being prejudice against old products to myself quite a bit. Like, oh blah – no, don’t use the Stila In the Light palette for the millionth time…grab one of your newer, less used palettes. No, you don’t need to wear MAC’s Creme Cup today – wear one of the million unused lippies beside it.

We get so excited when we find new products, that it’s like we feel a bit guilty if we gravitate towards the old ones. The upside to this is occasions such as this post do happen – and we get to shop in our vanity drawers and find lots of hidden treasures.

    P.S. Hue is good all-day, everyday whether it’s 2011 or 2020 haha

  • DelicateAndLayered

These look like some great buys. I have not tried the Naked palettes but I hear they are pretty amazing!

  • I’m still yet to try out Tarte’s Tipsy but I think it’s going to be happening soon, I’ve lusted after it for far too long! xx

Your blog is magical, I could get lost in it for days. You inspire me to take my blog to greater and higher levels, thank you!

  • This post made me smile – I remember the VDM of 2012 and even before that! I think I’m the last person on the planet who has yet to try the Tarte Amazonian Clay blushes -_- (shock horror!). Maybe when one of my beloved blushes hits pan I’ll consider adding tipsy to my collection as it sounds like a true winner!

  • I remember you wearing all of these! I think this was around the time I discovered your channel/blog – I def own tipsy because of you!

I still use a lot of these! I guess I’m just stuck in the past haha
