Five Tips to Faking Perfect Eyeshadow When You’re Cack Handed Like Me

While I’ve managed to get base, contouring, blush, a bold lip and all of those makeup-related processes down, eyeshadow along with liner is still one of the things I struggle with the most. I put it down to the fact that I’m a terribly cack-handed person who can’t even eat their food with a knife and fork in the correct hand – it’s a struggle, you know? So today I thought I’d share my top five tips for fellow cack-handed girls on how to fake perfect eyeshadow when it’s really your bugbear. Tried and tested, baby…

1. Buy yourself a MAC 217. Before I purchased my MAC 217 Brush I was nothing in the eyeshadow department. Sure there are dupes and it has its flaws (after two years or so, depending on how much you use it, it loses shape and needs replacing), but there’s just something about this brush that blends eyeshadow so expertly no matter how cack-handedly you’re using it. No matter the texture, colour, placement it snuggles into your crease and does all the work for you.

2. Smudge with that finger. While the MAC 217 is preferable sometimes all your eyeshadow needs is a smudge of a fingertip around the edges to ensure it’s blended till its full potential. Start lightly and always use a clean digit, but hey – that’s another 10 fresh applicators to add to your kit.

3. Go duochrome. Ah the good ol’ duochromes. What you’re looking for here is an eye colour then when blended on to the eye looks completely different on the lid in more opaque volumes looks like a completely different shade to when it’s blended up to a sheerer layer in the crease. Great examples of this include MAC’s Eyeshadows in Club and Sable and the Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Toasted – but there are loads.

4. While you’re at it, stick to shimmer. Textures that have a bit of a reflective quality to them just tend to be a bit more forgiving when it comes to application. There’s more room for error shall we say as the shimmer tends to aid blending out and harsh lines are less likely to come by. They don’t have to be glittery, just with a bit of somethin’ somethin’ in them.

5. Watch a shedload of tutorials. Not mine – the professionals. Try Charlotte Tilbury’s, Pixiwoo’s or Lisa Eldridge’s videos and study them hard. It’s good to watch a large range as everyone has a different eye shape so the more people, the better and as you go through you can weed out what tips apply to you best.

There you go. Five tips and you’ll be blending in your MAC Club with your MAC 217 like Sam from Pixiwoo in no time at all…
