When it comes to candles, you’re either a wax burning lover or you’re not. I wholeheartedly fall into the former category and love nothing more than one flickering away while I curl up to bash out my posts or to add a touch of seduction to my beans on toast dinner (surprisingly, not Instagrammed). In a bizarre turn of events, it turns out the guys at Diptyque read my post all about my boyfriend burning expensive candles debacle and whisked over two replacements to Chéz VDM. To say it was a good day when those arrived is a bit of an understatement (unsurprisingly documented on Instagram). One of the scents I’d tried before - Figuier, but the other Feu de Bois* I’d never burned…
That’s not to say I hadn’t sniffed it every time I found myself in a Space NK (at least once a week these days) after seeing multiple raves posted on multiple blogs. But I did in fact sniff at it. I wasn’t bowled over, it smelled a little funky for my tastes and it never made it home with me. But when it found itself propped up on my coffee table I thought I’d give it the benefit of the doubt, struck up a match and let it do its thang and you know what? I was pleasantly surprised. A little woody, a little musky with a hell of a load of smokey, it’s a nice winter substitute to my fireplace-less flat. I found it to blend perfectly when burnt in conjunction with the super sickly Laura Mercier Warm Roasted Chestnuts Signature Candle – the sweet and smokey balance each other out and if I try not to think about how much money is quite literally being burnt away then I’m a happy bunny with a delicious smelling flat indeed.
Moral of the story: never judge a candle by its unburning on-the-shelf scent. Gawd, that’s a catchy one to remember!
