Johnny Engstrom using L’Oréal Professionnel: The girls’ collection was a grown-up take on skatergirl with a heavy Sarah Moon influence, playing on the elegant but blurred movement captured in Sarah’s photos. There’s a real ’90s edge with beautiful textures and fabrics and I wanted to contradict this in a way by creating a rawness to the hair – it’s a bit Cindy Crawford inspired. I started by spraying the Techni-art Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo Style Reviver to the roots to give the hair a matte texture. I then sprayed sections with Techni-art Volume Architect Thickening Blow-dry Lotion, took hefty chunks of the hair into twists, and pinned them up. After doing this all around the head, I unpinned the twists, and wrapped the hair round my finger and blow dried each section before breaking up the wave with my fingers. This technique means you get a natural look to the tips of the hair without the stark curl that some tongs can create. Sexy waves made simple.

Another lazy-locked ‘second day’ hair look. I could get used to this. In fact I used to use this process back in the day before I owned any hair stylers – mini buns secured with ’90s bobbles and blow-dried. If we’re buying into the whole ‘style goes in circles’ thing, then I predict it’ll be time to dust my crimper off when next season rolls around…
