Cream eyeshadows are still a relatively new thing for me and I can’t tell if it’s because when I first got into makeup the formula didn’t really exist on the mainstream counters or if I turned a blind eye already bamboozled by eye colour, still trying to get my head around the classic powder textures. Though I do remember that one of my first pocket money beauty purchases was a cream eyeshadow from Miss Sporty. It was bronze (see, times don’t change – always been a neutral gal!), with a slight shimmer running through it and approximately five minutes after application it had crumbled into a creasy mess that resembled the appearance of dirt getting caught in the pattern of your shoe soles. Nice. On second thoughts perhaps my first experience with them was just so darn awful I never really attempted them again till recently.
Formulas now vastly improved, it’s a rarity to come across an über creasy formula and in fact, I find cream eyeshadows to be some of the longest lasting amongst my stash. Go product developers! They are simple in terms of their ability to smudge and smoke and usually it’s a one-wash-wonder that you can blend all over the lid and not need to beef up with anything else. And the extra bonus? A fingertip works best, though a bit of a MAC 217 in the crease is what I use to finish it off. Efficient, easy and effortless looking – what’s not to love. The Luxe Option – Tom Ford Cream Colour for Eyes in Spice. The colour I’m wearing in the picture above, this is the priciest of the bunch but it glides on beautifully and stays put. And isn’t the colour a tough one to describe? It’s like a wheat-y, copper-y, brown. I love.
The Suits-All Nude – Bourjois Colour Edition 24hr Eyeshadow in Petale de Glace. This is a great neutral for most. Because the tone of it isn’t a million miles away from my natural skin colour I can get quite slap dash with it and double it up as a highlight on the brow bone or cheekbones if I’m feeling thrifty.
The Line or Lid Smudger – By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Brown Perfection. Ah common’ you knew this one would be in here? A deep bronze with the slightest hint of shimmer I use this along the lashline – above and/or below – or pop it all over the lid for a deep wash of colour.
The Perfect Bronze – Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes in Fuller Fudge. I love this colour. It’s one that whenever other people wear I compliment them and they tell me it’s this. The name is right, it’s like a fudgey brown and though the applicator looks slightly chunky for me one swipe fits my lid pretty perfectly.
The Budget Option – Maybelline Colour Tattoo 24-Hour Gel-Cream Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze. A classic. Hands up who’s already got this? I’m imaging most of you with one hand on your laptop and the other waving around in the air right now because this is the best budget offering. Plus, the colour is a pretty taupe with just the right amount of shimmer.
The Really, Really Long-Lasting One – MAC Prolongwear Paint Pot in Eclair. Though I’m pretty sure this colour was annoyingly limited edition, the formula is not and that’s the win here because this stuff is seriously badass. It’s so long-lasting. It doesn’t budge. My tip? Don’t even think about removing it without the Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover.
