The Weekend Post #9: Clarisonic Update

I have been using my Clarisonic Mia now for a good 6 weeks, and so I thought it was time to give you guys a little update on how I’m finding it. As I said in my ‘January Favourites’ video, I did go through a 2 week or so ‘purging’ stage when I first started using it. My skin went kind of bumpy and red, and I had a fair few more spots than usual – if I counted them I think it was double digits. Nice! However that has subsided now and I’m left with much more desirable results after using the Mia. My skin looks quite glowy actually, no redness, just nice fresh skin that feels deeply cleansed. I did start off using it twice a day as suggested, but for the past 2 weeks I have only been using it in the evenings and I think that is more suited to my combination, slightly sensitive skin. In the mornings I have reverted back to using my Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish with a muslin cloth, and in the evenings I removed my makeup with the Bioderma H20 Cleansing Solution and then use the Clarisonic to cleanse.

The only problem I am having with the Mia, is working out which cleanser to use with it. I started off using my usual Liz Earle, a cleanser that I have been using for the past year or so. But I just didn’t feel like it foamed up enough, nor cleaned really. After I ‘Clarisonic-ed’ I ran the muslin cloth over my face and dirt was still coming off. Not great. So then I moved onto the Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash*, this definitely gave more of a deep clean, but just left my face too foamy! It made using the Clarisonic messy business – froth went bloody everywhere, even up my nose! It also left my face feeling a little dry, so it was back to the drawing board. After a little spend up in Space NK, the lovely Sales Assistant loaded me up with some fancy samples to try, and one in particular, the REN Purity Cleansing Balm, has caught my eye. I received a teeny-weeny 5 ml sample and my face gobbled that up in a week, it seriously loved the stuff. It’s a tub of hardened product, which when rubbed into the face melts into a rich oil that dissolves all the grime. It works well with the Clarisonic too. The whizzing suds it up into a more milky consistency and my face feels clean, but nourished after. It is next on my list! Anyone else have any recommendations for cleansers to use with the Clarisonic, I would love to hear!

I really want to try this, but the price tag and the ‘purging’ really puts me off!

    • I had the same problem. £120..yikes! GO GO GO to amazon, I got mine on there for £72 plus shipping! Bargain…or I would like to believe

  • I’m so curious about the clarisonic. I heard so much good about this! But unfortunately they don’t sell it here in Holland..

    • Maria01389

ASOS sell them and they ship free internationally worldwide 🙂 xx

  • Boscy

I’ve recently started using the Origins Checks & Balances with my Clarisonic and I feel like the two are a match made in heaven! I kind of see what you mean about the foam overload and it can be a little messy, but as I always use my Clarisonic in the bath at night with it, the messy factor doesn’t really bother me. If I was leaning over a sink that may be a different matter! I still love using my Cleanse and Polish but just in the mornings with a muslin cloth instead of Clarisonic-ing the sh*t out of my face twice a day!

I just wrote a long post about the Origins C&B + Clarisonic combo if you’re interested xx

  • Becca

Ren skincare is amazing! I love the rose 012 serum, its so lovely! The cleansing balm sounds interesting 🙂

  • I love my Clarisonic too (although I am slightly jealous that yours is purple…) I’ve been have the same dilemma with which cleanser to use too so thanks for the recommendation, the REN stuff sounds amazing xx

  • I had been using the Body Shops seaweed one for combo skin which is fairly gentle but leaves my skin feeling cleansed and works really well with the mia but only recently have been using the Liz Earle, but I have to agree it does not work too well with the mia, like you i don’t feel as ‘cleansed’ after 🙁

  • Kirstenturner

I definitely love love love using the Purity Made Simple by Philosophy with my Clairsonic Mia! It foams just the slightest bit and I love it, definitely worth a try! 🙂

  • I use the Origins Checks & Balances with my Mia and find it to work okay for me! My “purging” phase lasted about 3 weeks though, the last week being the worst! Its clearing up nicely now and if it wasn’t for my dodgy sunburn from my holiday, my face wouldn’t be as red haha!

  • Luludilettante

I’m a new Clarisonic addict too… I was using the La Prairie foam but that  didn’t spread well. Now I found out about Cetaphyl it’s so much better!

  • oh god send recommend my way, im like you trying to find whats the best product to use! im using a foaming cleanser atm but its leaving my skin feeling a bit stripped! then again that may just be due to the horrific cold weather! glad you’re getting on with your clarisonic, so glad i bought mine! 🙂 xx

  • karola5

I like Alpha-h balancing cleanser with aloe vera, it doesn’t foam or dry out, it’s truly a miracle, for me anyway. I need clarisonic . for sure.

  • Danielle

the Philosophy Purity Made Simple is beautiful with the Clarisonic! I actually used this cleanser before purchasing the Clarisonic, and didn’t think much of it–but when paired with Clarisonic deep cleanse…it’s beautiful!

  • Your skin may feel dry after using the clarisonic with your origins because it has natural products in it that actually dry out/irritate skin and the clarisonic was probably cleansing ur face a lot more deeply allowing for the cleanser to be more irritating… you can check out this site here where it talks about the ingredients (I find this site helpful, maybe you will too)

  • I also like to use the clarisonic (well I have something else, but same difference) in the shower to keep down the messy factor 🙂

  • charlotte_queen

I really want to try one! Sounds like its worked wonders for your skin | Charlotte Couture Blog

  • I love Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple cleanser with the Clarisonic. It really helps cleanse my skin, without having a ton of foam on my face!

  • s_mccay88

I would highly reccomend the This Works: Clean Skin Gentle Cleanser – I recieved it as a sample in my January Feel Unique box and have since fell in love with it, but only at night with my Clarisonic

  • I’m using Lancome’s Creme Radiance — it foams up so beautifully!  Not bad with the cetaphil cleanaser either, but I just love the whippy texture it gives to a foaming cleanser

  • I use the Pai cleanser!  Amazing stuff!  Not too creamy and it’s 78% organic, excellent for sensitive skin. xx

  • gemma-lc

I found the same with using the Liz Earle and the Clarisonic, but I have found that Kiehls ultra facial oil-free cleanser works really all with it :)

I ran into this cleanser problem as well. I tried tons! Eventually I settled in quite nicely with Philosophy Purity Cleanser. It lathers up nicely and leaves your skin feeling smooth, clean and not stripped dry.

  • jasminelovenars

I love to use Cedaphil gentle skin cleanser with my clarisonic

  • daisylane

I was emptying out my bank account at SpaceNK too last weekend and the sales lady gave me a whole bunch of samples which I’ve since disregarded in a drawer. As soon as I read about the REN balm I shot straight over to rifle through them on the off-chance that she popped one of those in my bag. Sadly not though! Although you’ve made me think twice about my samples and I plan on actually giving them a try – that’s what they’re for anyway I suppose!! xo

I’ve been using Philosophy Purity cleanser with my Clarisonic for years and I feel like it works pretty well. I’ve been dying to try out the Liz Earle cleanser and had been wondering how it would do with the Clarisonic. It’s too bad that they don’t work so well together. :(

I remove my make using Clinique rinse off foaming cleanser (I wouldn’t say it’s terrifically foamy though, more a nice soft cream) which leaves you squeaky clean albeit a little tight-skinned. Then I use my regular face wash (boots botanics or clarins) to address any skincare needs. I was always told that you can’t fix or work on any problem areas without removing your makeup first which makes perfect sense as I can then use a moisturising face wash that I know isn’t good for removing dirt but is fabulous for giving me that glow. Would love a clarisonic but for the time being am sticking to mothercare muslin cloths 😉 x

I take off my makeup with Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil and then cleanse my face with Clarins Gentle Cleanser with Cottonseed. Not sure if this is the best combination yet, but so far it’s working.

Like many others have said, Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple works really well with the Clarisonic! They really do work beautifully together.

  • Nicky

I have been thinking of getting a Clarisonic for a while now, but after hearing everyone talking about the dredded purging stage it worries me. I already suffer from blemishes and I think with added spots due to the Clarisonic it would make me not want to use it… Keep my thinking cap on for this one… Great post! 🙂

  • I use a Dermalogica Cleansing Gel with my clarisonic and it is perfect! 🙂

    • Hey! I just ordered the C-Sonic. I am tempted to try Dermalogica cleansers. What type of skin do u have? I have dry/sensitive. I would really appreciate if you could help me.

  • Vickyayre

I know that Purity by Philosophy is amazing to work with when using the clarosonic, I know that philosophy is available in larger boots stores.

    • Hey! I just ordered the C-Sonic. After reading everyones thoughts I am confused as to what cleanser I should get. What type of skin do u have? I have dry/sensitive. I am wondering if the Philosphy would be okay for me. I would really appreciate if you could help me.

  • Jennifer

I ordered a Clarisonic last week, I got the Plus which can be used on the body too. Hopefully it will sort out the problems I have there too. I found this post on the Clarisonic blog, it gives some cleanser ideas.

Ive had my Clarisonic for a week now. I am right in the middle of the purging phase 🙁 Ive also had trouble working out which cleanser to use with it. The foaming cleansers foam up way too much and become messy (not to mention dry out your skin) creamy cleansers seem to work better. I am still experimenting though.

  • BeaR

Try cetaphil! Its only about £8 and if you use with water foams a tiny bit but can also be used dry with a cloth too. Non-drying and just a simple cleanser. I alternate between this and alpha H x

  • I tend to use La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel and I think it’s works really well with Clarsonic. Those Clarsonic gels that are meant to go with Clarsonic are very crap and smell horrible. x

    • Hey! I just ordered the C-Sonic.  What type of skin do u have? I am just wondering if the La Roche
Effaclar Purifying Foaming Ge would be suitable for me. I have dry/sensitive skin. I would really appreciate if you could help me.

      • Konstantinasamara

I have dry/sensitive skin and I use Elemis rosepetal cleanser and Lancôme oil. You have to change your cleanser every 6 months otherwise skin gets used to it! Xx

      • Martha

The La Roche-Posay Effaclar range is meant for “oily, sensitive skin”, thats what it says on the package 🙂 I use it and have quite oily skin. Not sure if it is recommended for dry skin.

  • The Clarins Daily Engergiser gel is AMAZING. You need the smallest amount of it and a small 30ml bottle lasted me like 3 months! The Murad Anti Ageing Acne Cleaner is great too and you also only need to smallest amount of that x

  • Jessica Barron

Clarisonic with Dermalogica special cleansing gel is a really lovely combination! Tempted to buy some REN products! xo

  • Clay

Great review 🙂 Love your last haul video ! xx

  • Margaretanderson19

I use a johnsons wipe to take the top layer of makeup off, then leanse and polish as normal and then the bare minerals face wash with the clarasonic, sounds a lot but it’s quick and works great for me. I hen use Liz Earle superskin concentrate one night and alpha h rejuvenating cream the next and alternate.

  • I just use drugstore Neutrogena Clear Pore Daily Scrub. I feel like it’s gentle enough to use with the Mia yet it helps get into the pores and clear out my acne because it contains benzoyl peroxide.

  • Sally

I like to use Clarins Daily Energizer Cleansing Gel with my clarasonic, it’s good!

  • Kelly

    Clinique’s Foaming Cleanser is brilliant

  • Megan

I also have combination/sensitive skin and had the same problem with the cleanse & polish. I really like the La Roche Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cream Cleanser.

  • Eec147

I love my clarisonic too! I like using it with Ren cleansing milk. It doesnt froth up but it works great.

  • Rachel Phelps953

Philosophy’s Purity works amazing with the clarisonic!

  • I’ve been debating on a Clarisonic for some time now! Thanks for sharing this! I never really thought about how different cleansers would or wouldn’t work! :/

  • ann

i use the ren balm ! just not w. the clarisonic since i always feel like with that, there’s a but of residue left (but i like using it with a muslin cloth).

  • Anonymous

    you’re skin is flawless!

  • Ellie Hearts

La Mer Cleansing Gel works well 🙂

  • gabrielle

I love using the Clarins cream cleanser with my Clarisonic Mia. It cleans really well and smells so good!

  • whateverzoewants

    Hey Anna,
Bit late here but may be helpful to others, I suggest Burt’s Bees Sensitive Facial Cleanser! Or any Burt’s Bees cleansers in general!

  • Inkygrl

I use it with the Origins Checks and Balances. I know what you mean about the mess, I think the thing is you really just need a teeny little bit. And maybe a bit less water? Also want to say I love your blog! I’m a new subscriber from Virginia and just think you are adorable!! Loved your posts from NYC… Keep up the great work!!

  • Saskia

It sounds as though you’re using it to actually remove your makeup? I used wipes to take mine off and baby oil to remove eye make up. Then I wash my face with the Clarisonic and foaming cleanser from YSL’s Forever Youth range. I love it
