The Weekend Post #8: The ‘New’ Makeup Collection

It’s been a while since I’ve done ‘The Weekend Post’, but I quite like the routine of there being something consistent on my blog, so I’m going to try to resurrect it. Right, now I have a confession to make. When I first got into this whole beauty blogging thing, I was pretty obsessed with watching ‘Makeup Collection’ videos. I would swoon over someone’s collection of every single shade of lipgloss MAC has ever made, and mentally make note of the ebay seller everyone get’s those nail polish racks from as one day I planned on having 500 polishes. I made lists of things to buy, and perhaps made some purchases that weren’t exactly necessary. Although I have always been quite good at outing the crap in my collection, and passing on cosmetics I never use to friends and family and having the odd blog sale here and there, it’s only been in the last few weeks that I have really decided to knuckle down and streamline.

I have to say that from what I have seen on Twitter and chatting with other bloggers, cutting your makeup stocks down, seems to be the new ‘Makeup Collection’! So over this weekend, something pretty momentous happened. I had a reet-good clear out sesh and have now condensed every single piece of makeup I own to fit in one drawer. Yes, bar the little bag of ‘touch-up’ makeup that I leave on my desk at work, this is it! And the drawer ain’t even that big! To cut it down, I tried to stick to a simple rule – if I hadn’t worn it in the last 6 months, then out it went. There were some things that I love, but never used (quite a few MAC MSF’s fitted into that category actually), and instead of them clogging up space, it was time to bid farewell. It’s really nice to now look into my drawer and actually be able to say that I use everything. It’s now not a makeup collection, but a drawer of my everyday makeup. I will try and pop up a video showing you what made the cut soon 🙂

  • niks_123

I love watching those videos as well! I really should take a leaf out of your book and cut down as well ;o Haha

  • I think your collection is just perfect like this.

  • Boscy

Can’t wait to see the video! I’ve been trying to streamline my makeup collection too. Ten mascaras when I only use two is just ridic xx

  • I love how not wasting and not having excessive amounts of make up is starting to trend. 🙂 I’ve got a drawer sectioned off with squares and for each type of makeup product, there’s a section for it and I’m not allowed to go over the area allocated. So, if it can’t fit then I don’t buy. haha My bank account would’ve hugged me if it could. :p x

P.S Can’t wait for a video. I prefer snooping in decent sized makeup collections so it doesn’t seem so over whelming. haha

  • kjaskunaite

I plan on doing this soon! I have things like glitter liners which are only used once in a blue moon, and things that I’ve never even touched before. I’ll try and use some up first though and see how that goes on 😀

  • Omg the 6 month rule is brutal but a really good idea 🙂 I

  • Nicky

This is a great post and really inspiring to someone like me who can be alittle bit of a hoarder 😉 Looking forward to a video on the specifics 🙂

  • Anonymous

Such a good idea, although I’m really bad at throwing things away!

  • blondie294

Its so hard to keep the collection to a minimum once you’ve got involved with beauty blogging, because you see so much delicious stuff that you want to buy!

  • I’ve been doing the same thing. I’d rather have less clutter.

    Kindness is the best accessory,

  • I’m working on using what I own before I buy anything else, especially when it comes to make-up. I don’t need a whole drawer full of eyeshadows when I only really use my Naked palette! Looking forward to seeing the video 🙂 xx

  • Amy coughtrey

Hi Vivianna, if any of your MSF are for sale i would definaltely be interested! x

  • Nicola

Thats really good idea, you should do a video!

  • I really like this too. You’re right, it does seem like everybody is condensing their make-up collections down and I too am trying to reduce the urge to keep buying things I don’t need or hanging onto stuff I never use. I’m regularly trying to work on using products up I already have x x

  • Makeup and cosmetics are the one thing I struggle to part with even though I know I really need to. Theres always that thought in the back of my mind…oh ill use it some day and by then it will probably be manky and ruined! Its such a shame as we throw so much money away on products we hardly ever use but I am such a sucker when it comes to products 🙂 x

  • I love this post! I keep trying to condense my makeup collection down but then end up buying even more as I’ve got more room! Looking forward to seeing your video on what you decided to keep 🙂 xx

  • elizamaemakeup

lovely post, where did you buy the cute container pot things that hold your makeup in? xox

  • Shysmiles

A very healthy collection! I know healthy is a random word, but it seems quite fitting!

  • Great job!! I have done this a couple of time and ended up buying stuff anyway, so I have been on a no buy beauty/make up stuff since last April and it does help.

Yes would love to see the video!!

  • Line

I wish I had the courage to start cleaning up my makeup. I honestly have some things, since I was like 8 years old, which is rank, but the smell of them makes me sentimental. 🙂

  • Awesome job! I recently did the same thing and it definitely was difficult at times but I’m glad I did it!

  • Clay

Such a great way of ‘refreshing’ your collection 🙂 Definitely going to be considering this in the near future ! xx

  • Nice! I did the same thing a while back and it’s a great feeling afterwards! Though I still have a box with things I wasn’t sure about keeping or not, but I’ll probably won’t use those things so away with them! ^^

  • amy gamble

    well jelous!
    love your blog.

  • Shenley Gallimore

I’m just about to move in with my bf have done the exact same thing this weekend. Theres a few things I was sad to let go off but if you have never worn them whats the point?!

Well done for taking the plunge!

  • Mademoiselle Classy

I just saw you new blog design. Well done!

  • Lauren – Gotta Love A Trier

Some of the makeup collections on YT are mental! This is still a lot but great that it fits in one drawer! 🙂

  • Rachael Eve

Love this post – I was exactly the same when I first started watching youtube videos; all I wanted was to have a massive collection with all the racking and lipstick holders!! haha. It’s nice to hear that that trend is over!! 🙂

  • G.

How fun. I did the exact same thing today. Decluttered and organized my bathroom, took me 3 hours. Not much left – just the necessary.

  • laurabrice

The Chantecaille Just Skin keeps waving at me all the time! Do you recommend? Since I’ve seen you wearing it I am feeling mega enabled….x

  • anca.lb90

This is amazing! I agree with you that the trend right now is Less is More… definitely!

  • thedistance_tohere

I love that you did this (have been watching your vids/reading your blog for a while). In the last 6 months I have become a little obsessed with watching and reading about makeup but I still prefer a pared down approach to makeup purchases, so if I choose to buy an expensive item say a  lipstick it has more value beause I use it regularly  instead of it sitting in a drawer gathering dust. X

  • charlotte_queen

thats so smart of you, i still have makeup from yonks ago (including some pretty nasty pink and green eyeshadows) that its probably time to get rid of. good for you!

  • Lucy

it was very brave of you to streamline, but incredibly good! I think i’ll sort out my makeup once i settle down and stop changing routine everyday! X

  • Gavina D

I really like the idea of that! I’m still pretty new to beauty blogging so I think I’m still at the stage of wanting to buy everything but one day, one day…!

  • Sarah S.

Ooh, I’m fascinated to see what you’ve kept!

  • Oh dear, I have way too much makeup!!

  • Donna

Love love love that this approach to makeup is becoming more common!  Having shite loads of makeup, all with use-by dates on them, that don’t get used much is just nonsensical. Good on ya girl! 🙂 xx

  • Dafneortiz

love this!!! what is the point of buying tons of makeup just because it is limited edition or the new collection…buy it because you LOVE it, SUITS  you and you will USE it….greetings from Mexico!!!

  • Arena17_2003

I’m trying to do this right now too! With lots of things, actually (clothes, home stuff, etc.). It feels really good to pare down to what you really need and love. I really want to see what made your cut. :)

  • Great post!!
I like a smaller collection as it ensures every item gets used at some point instead of it being shoved to the back of a drawer and forgotten about. Looking forward to the video =) xox

  • Jenny

I LOVE this! I too have watched lots of makeup collection videos and lusted after all the goodies, but this approach makes so much more sense! Good on you! 🙂

  • Maria

This is amazing, and I actually did this myself the other day, and I popped in a bag all of the stuff I don’t use anymore! I don’t know if I will give it away or store it there, out of the way, although I know that will go to waste if I don’t pass it on!

I’m quite excited to see what made the cut!

  • Anna Elisabeth

This post really inspired me to sort out my makeup too.  I don’t have that much and I pretty much do use everything I own, but I’d like to make my makeup drawer as neat and tidy as yours. I might get some little boxes for this today and make a post about organizing everything on my blog. 🙂

  • Maarieel_

I love this idea !, I keep telling myself that I have 100’s of dollars just sitting there and that makes me upset ! ): I’ve cut down my wishlist, and I think I might but down my current stash as well, very inspirational, might just have to take a look at my ‘collection’ tomorrow and turn it into an ‘everyday’ stash. 🙂

  • coco

  • sophie

I’m not sure if you’ll have gotten rid of what didn’t make the cut yet, but a video on that would also be interesting if possible

  • Guest

So refreshing to see a blogger who isn’t obsessed with numbers or having the ‘most’ products! I love to clear out regularly, what’s the point of hanging on to 59873169 lipsticks we never use!

  • guest

could you do a post on your tinted moisterisers? i cant decide to buy liz earle or laura mercier, think people would enjoy reading as you talk about all of them but never really say which one you prefer and why… X
