The Non-Girly Girls Guide to Pink Makeup

IMG_9608 IMG_9772

I wouldn’t say I’m the girliest of girls. Sure I liked my body glitter and butterfly clips growing up, but I would also happily accompany my Dad to Arsenal matches (#GoonerForLyf) and attempted to play in the Girl’s Football League at school (emphasis on ‘attempted‘). I also don’t own a single piece of pink clothing – pyjama or otherwise – or any clothing that isn’t grey, white, navy or black for that matter. But that doesn’t mean I shun the shade when it comes to makeup. In fact, pink can be the perfect anecdote to a tired complexion or a look that’s just lacking something, you know? So here’s a run-down of my favourite pinky hues for eyes, lips and cheeks that won’t make you feel like Barbie…

Let’s go for eyes first because I reckon it’s the hardest to pull off. As goes with any red-ish toned shadow you want to make sure your pupils are nice and bright and there’s plenty of mascara to be loaded on – sorted. My top pink shadow pick would then have to be the Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette and the more I use it and compare it to the other two I realise that this one is second in command (which the original one at the top). In the picture above I’m wearing Buzz all over the lid with a touch of Nooner in the crease. Pinky, but not too pink.

Cheeks is an obvious choice; there’s a pink out there for everyone. Creamy textures can be a little easier to work with, plus negate the need for highlighter and my favourite palette that contains a trio of rosy goodness is the Stila Convertible Colour Trio in Cool. Look at thatLillium – the centre shade – is my most-used. Then of course there’s the Max Factor Miracle Touch Creamy Blush in Soft Pink that’s a touch deeper in tone and looks equally good on the cheeks or lips or if you fancy a more baby pink shade, perhaps a better choice for a the pale beauties among us, then the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Dollface is the one.

Lips are the easiest to pull off when it comes to pink because of the spectrum of textures out there – sheer, shimmery, matte, creamy – the lot. On the lighter side of things there’s always gloss and I really like the Maybelline ColourSensational Shine Gloss in Cashmere Rose. Or a more opaque version of that is the MAC Lipstick in Angel which is the colour I’m wearing above. If you fancy going a little bolder then there’s the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Lovesick which leaves a high-shine finish on the lips that wears into a fuchsia stain or the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Ole Flamingo which being a warm-toned, long-wearing, ‘slick on and don’t have to worry about it’ option, may just be my favourite pick of all. Saving the best till last and all that.
