The Long Haul Flight Kit

I wouldn’t say I’m the worst flyer in the world, but I’m definitely not the best. A bit of turbulence and I find myself sitting rigid in the seat, gripping onto the arms while Mark holds my hand and tells me that turbulence is the best bit. What a nutter. I also haven’t been on many long haul flights in my life – the longest being 6 hours or so to New York – so if I said I was looking forward to the 11 hour flight to L.A yesterday, then I most definitely would have been lying, but you know what? It really wasn’t that bad. The flight was smooth for the most part, I got lots of blog post writing done and practically re-watched a whole season of Parks & Recreation. Here’s the thing though, I tend to overpack my hand-luggage like mad. ‘Maybe I’ll need a blister plaster? Or perhaps a sewing kit. Don’t forget to pack 10 hairbands!’. Given that my journey to the airport yesterday was long and involved almost every mode of transport possible I tried to pack as light as I could and I think I actually managed to utilise everything that came with me *pats self on back*. Wanna see what came with?

THE BORING BITS. Let’s get those out of the way first shall we? Of course you need phone/wallet/keys/travel documents/passport/diary all those kinds of things. I also tend to carry a little medicine kit, a sleep mask, toothbrush and toothpaste, tissues, ear plugs and the softest hoodie I can find that’s big and baggy so doubles up as a mini blanket (this one is from H&M).

THE FUN BITS. I always prepare incase the in-flight entertainment is horrendously crap, so I take my laptop which is stuffed with plenty of episodes of my favourite T.V shows because I really don’t care if I end up watching the ‘Treat Yo’Self 2011‘ episode of Parks & Rec for the 17th time. Then my Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones came with me because they block out everything from crying babes to engine noise. I also threw in Caitlin Moran’s ‘How To Be a Woman’ which is hi-larious. I’ve almost finished it – it’s THAT good.

THE BEAUTY BITS. In the past I’ve packed makeup, face masks – I’ve gone a bit overboard – but there are just two beauty functions that you need satisfying when you’re on a plane: moisture and cleanliness, so all the pieces I took with me this time focused around those. For moisture I packed my facial oil that I was already taking me as part of my skincare routine for the trip, which ended up being a decanted bottle of the MV Organics Rose Booster Plus (plus points because it feels so darn relaxing to apply too), and MUJI pot of my Estee Lauder Revitalising Supreme Eye Cream. For lips I took the Clarins Hydraquench Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm, purely for its finger-free application, then for that clean feeling I packed the L’Occitane Lavender Clean Hand Gel, along with a rollerball of Elizabeth & James’ Nirvana White EDT and the Caudalie Beauty Elixir because it’s as refreshing as hell. Extra things that came along for the ride include a Mini Wet Brush which mainly acted as a hairband holder because we all know that I brush my hair never and the This Works Deep Sleep Stress Less Rollerball which comes in terribly handy whenever you’re having a shaky moment in the air – physically and mentally.
