The Guide To Comfy Weekend Dressing

Not gonna lie, I feel like I’m the guru on this…

When it comes to certain genres of clothing, there are very few that I feel 100% comfortable with. Party dressing in my downfall, stepping outside of my monochrome comfort zone makes me wince and summer outfits fill me with a particular kind of dread – I need to shave my legs! Tan! Did I remember to de-fuzz my armpits this morning or am I going to have the spend the whole day with my elbows pinned to my sides? However, when it comes to comfy, cosy and casual weekend dressing I AM IN. Your stretchiest denim and light knits, flat shoes and fits that flatter a Sunday roast-filled belly are my speciality. So today I thought I’d share my weekend capsule wardrobe essentials that I would wear every single day of the week if I could. Now word on the street tells me that we are currently experiencing a spell of B-E-A-U-tiful sunshine (unfortunately the Lake District where I’m currently holidaying with my family, hasn’t got that memo just yet), so I thought I’d sprinkle today’s post with a bit of summer flavour. If you’re looking to add some clammy weather Saturday and Sunday-appropriate garb into your basket, here’s what I’d suggest…

OVERALLS

I know that overalls might not seem like a summery addition per se, but hear me out on this one. Firstly, they are the ultimate weekend essential. They are like slipping on a well-fitting glove that never cuts or digs in and are particularly roomy around the trunk section. At weekends you don’t have to worry so much about the naked peeing situation as you tend to be in less of a rush, plus if you’re wearing them when it’s warm you don’t end up freezing your nipples off when you do so. I’ve got a load of wear from my dungarees in previous summers, because not only do they pair well with something thicker underneath like pictured here on chilly days, they look equally good with a silk shirt, t-shirt or even a vest top underneath if it’s REAL toasty outside. My current favourites are the Madewell Denim Overalls that I’m wearing in this post that I still have yet to spill an unremovable stain on. GET IN. Although ASOS churn out dungaree styles by the bucket load if you fancy dipping your toe in to test your appreciation levels before you drop some serious cash on an investment piece.

FLOATY BLOUSES

I was planning on talking about knitwear today – LOL! – but I feel like a brief chat about floaty blouses is better suited to the weather forecast, and let’s face it – they’re the number one summer essential whether it’s a Monday or a Sunday anyway. Depending on your dress code at work, a solid shirt might be able to work for during the week too, however I love ’em at the weekend because they still make me feel put together, whilst also having an air of elevation about them that jazzes up whatever I pair them with and makes me feel like less of a potato if I all I want to do is scroll through social media in my pyjamas. My go-to spot to cover me in this category is & Other Stories, which I’m pretty sure is the same for 99.5% of you lot reading this post too. A ruffled, maybe wrapped, floral patterned top is basically their blueprint at this point. If like me you can’t stop looking to buy things that are yellow then this Ruffle Wrap Blouse or this Plunging Jacquard Blouse are worth a browse. If you’re after something plainer this Oversized Billowy Shirt would look FAB paired with some pale wash jeans and tan sandals, or if stripes are more your bag then these ASOS Stripe Ruffle Blouse and Striped Blouse with Pockets need to checked out (literally) right this minute.

A CASUAL TRAINER

I’ve never been much of a trainer gal. Sure I had a pair of Reefs during my surfer girl phase and then Converse for the skater girl one that followed, but in recent years it wasn’t until I purchased a pair of White Converse and then Black Vans Old Skool Trainers, that I truly realised how there was a sneaker shaped hole in my life. The main selling point here is that they are the epitome of comfort and often at the weekend we find ourselves getting some serious steps in walking to the pub for drinks, walking to the pub for dinner, walking to the beach to walk off everything that we drank and ate at the pub. In fact, they’re basically all I wear on my feet for those two special days. Once you’ve got your basics down – one white pair and one black pair should sort you out – then I’d suggest adding one colourful pair to your collection. Currently top of my shopping list are these Vans Old Skool Trainers in Yellow – SURPRISE SURPRISE! Don’t be fooled by these on first trip out, because they’re not the most comfortable of soles out there, but by third or fourth wander you’ll be feeling like you’re wearing slippers outside. If you’re more into lavender (which I hear is the new yellow apparently), then these Nike Internationalist Trainers which are bizarrely in the colour way Peach, which must be some kind of joke, might be more up your street. We’ll get round to sandals next time…
