I’ve never felt like a legit adult as I’ve never been a hot drink drinker. Hot Chocolate was about as much as I dipped into boiling waters and I can hand on my heart say I make one of the crappest cup of teas that has ever been brewed – trust me, you don’t want to test me on that. Though recently I’ve been sipping myself into the warm world; part though peer-pressure (ordering a cola in a coffee shop was wearing thin) and part down to my own caffeine curiosity. It started with a few gulps of the foam from the top of a cappuccino and I can now happily down the whole thing. Espresso shot and all. Just the one shot mind you. I’ve yet to take the real grown-up step to black coffee, but this whole episode got me thinking about the dark brown hues in my drawers and just how darn pretty they are. That cocoa richness that alludes to black, but on closer inspection leans a deepened brown that is just what the eyes need come this time of year. On the menu today? The black coffee edit, obviously.
When it comes to lids I had to plump for more latte-like shades; still with that brown quality, but a little more bronzey than I’d like to see in my cup. You remember how I feel about Clinique’s All About Shadow in Black Honey? Well the shade Olive In My Martini is equally beautiful. A mix between brown, bronze with a little bit of green through it – it’s a one-wash-wonder that works well on days when you require a sweep of shadow. Playing again on that deep bronze hue is Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow in Shimmering Bronze, a product I picked up back in New York that got misplaced in the backs of my drawers. I fished it out, swatched it on the back of my hand and vowed to never let it sit untouched again. A highly pigmented metallic this is hardy in finish and does not budge once applied. Paired with a touch of black in the crease – that’s the black coffee eye right there.
Lids aside, lets talk liners. Firstly there’s the ball that got this post rolling – the aptly named Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Kajal Liner in Black Coffee. Soft and subtly tinged with brown this formula glides on to the waterline and smokes out before setting; much like the Laura Mercier Long-Wear Cream Eye Pencil in Espresso. Similar formula, another appropriate name, though in a more browny shade for those who fancy a weaker, milkier look. Both of these look lush lining on their own sans shadow or paired with the two aforementioned shades for a true clout of coffee.
