Square or Almond?

I’ve been hacking my nails into a square-like fashion since I can remember. My best mate and I used to stock up on the Elegant Touch French Manicure sets on the way home from school and file our nails into oblivion before getting our white tips on. It was a thrice weekly occurrence. And after years of trimming them straight across, the whole square shape thing just became my thang. But for the past few seasons nails have been eking out into a more almond shape – ‘a curve that reflects that of your cuticle’ – is a term I’ve heard being bandied around. And it got me thinking, it’s time to crack out the Leighton Denny Crystal Nail File and get to work on softening those edges.

So here’s the before and after. Before showcasing CHANEL Le Vernis in Lilis which has been adorning my nails since its purchase, and after with a throwback to last summers orange hued favourites (Essie’s Fear or Desire is my fave), Rococo’s Nail Apparel in O.T.T Cream*. Now the difference is very minor given that my nails are rather short right now. Note to self: when trying to to transform my tips into a brand spanking new look let them grow a bit first, dur. But all it took was a bit of work at the edges, a little back and forth at the top and an almond appearance was (sorta) mine.

Coaxing my nails into an almond tip (visible to the non-nail obsessed person) will take a few weeks, but I’m pleased with the beginnings of a more rounded approach. So where do you sit on the fingertip fence – square or almond?

Hmmmm…I have heard the “mirror your cuticle shape” thing too, I think from a couple magazines recently. Your cuticle shape is really nice. Mine is actually pretty squarish so the whole squared nail shape works for me. Love the reddish coral nail colors!

  • Square is my favorite nail shape! Round ones just look odd on me!

  • Olivia S

My nails have always had the rounded shape, although in my school years I wanted the square shape too haha xx

I have more almond shaped nails but I wish I could get square nails. It’s just too time consuming for me to file my nails and it’s also not the most practical for me just because of what I do in life for now. xx

  • bacardi chasers

Mine are always almond shaped because I´m lazy. 😀

  • My nails are always rounded off as it suits my long, but tiny, hands a lot better!

  • Mine are fairly square as I cut them with clippers, and my filing skills are bloody awful. Trying to coax them into a more natural/less likely to snap state though.

  • Zuzik

They’ve always been almond and i don’t think i will ever change it 🙂

Very hard to see any difference when someone has short nails. I love short nails and think either looks neat tbh. I do dislike square nails on longer length nails.
Sorry for such an opinionated reply.

  • My nails naturally grow into lovely almond shapes and I’d never really thought about changing that. On shorter nails, the square shape looks lovely.

  • Tenneil

I definitely prefer the square look as the almond shape look is a bit too ‘mature’ looking for my style. I wouldn’t say my nails are either though, I just cut and file them to their natural shape, which is sort of round. They aren’t exactly square, but they have a curve. I really dislike the whole pointy nail trend though. So tacky!

  • Madeleine

I definitely always mirror my cuticles. It just makes my fingers look longer. <3

  • Rosie von Waldherr

I like a mixture of both shapes! I like my nails to be square but the edges to be a bit on the round side so they don’t hurt when I’m putting my contacts on =)

I’m more of a almond gal. It just suits my hands better. 🙂

  • Sarah Jeffcoate

I’m definitely an almond girl. I think square nails look a bit harsh on my hands. Almond is a lot more soft and flattering in my opinion. It’s a shame because my nickname is Squares =) xx

  • Rachel McAnoy

square edges just really don’t suit my hands so I’m all about almond!

Almond is the way to go!

  • I always round my nails off, I find it so difficult to have them square!

  • I like the square look, but I have to round mine off or I find they break easier. I also do this with clippers and rarely file my nails because I can’t stand the noise and feel!

Square! My nails looks more polished and chic that way.

    Mine are round(almond-shape)!!!

  • Azeen Elizabeth

I’ve had mine as square for as long as I remember but recently tried the almond trend and i love it. my fingers look longer and much more feminine.

  • Cátia

I go for square with rounded corners and I like to see my nails like that. I have tiny hands and little fingers so the total rounded shape makes my fingers look a bit fat-y.

  • Katie

    Your nails always look immaculate!

  • Evie Salter

I go for square purely because it is so much easier for me – as soon as I try and round them off they get way too short and don’t look symmetrical!

  • Allison

I had made my nails square for years too and started making them more rounded several months ago! I really prefer the rounded look now, I think it looks more feminine

  • Ela

My nails are so short that they just look wierd rounded – if they are straight they look nice and uniform. Although I do “reflect the natural shape of my cuticle” when I’m using a sheer colour like Essie Ballerina.

  • AllTheGoodStuff LJ

I’ve got mine squarish atm 🙂 both effects are nice

  • Daniella

beautiful colors! I like square nails, cool post!

I find it more difficult to maintain square nails, which is fine since I prefer the almond/oval shape anyways 🙂

  • I really love that Chanel, so beautiful. I’m quite lucky i don’t have to shape my nails very much at all, but i love both these looks, you have lovely nails!

  • Sarah S.

I’ve always gone with rounded (thought almond was a little pointy?), because if I have any sharp corners/edges I will scratch myself/man.

  • Myriam M. B.

It varies, but right now I’m liking the square shape 🙂

  • Stephanie

Definitely squoval, I do not mix well with 20 sharp corners on my fingertips!

  • I’ve become such an almond girl as time has gone on. Thankfully, for the most part, my nails naturally grow in that shape. Just makes it even more heartbreaking when I flatten one off! Beautiful colors my dear.

  • neonseattle

When I read almond-shaped nails I thought you were going for that trendy pointed nail look! But your definition of almond is quite natural. It’s how I prefer to wear my nails. Sharp edges and points are hard for me to maintain.

  • Kerry Provenzano

You’re a very talented writer, Anna. Reading your blog always feels more like reading a swish magazine. I’m starting to lean towards the almond side of the fence, I have to admit!

I love the almond look, just not for myself, I think id scratch myself too much with pointier nails!

  • Emily

I love an almond nail, but they’re a little high maintenance and hard to achieve if your nails aren’t long enough. I stick to an oval for everyday, it looks much more natural than square.

  • Maddy Cane

An almond for me, I wish my nails were a bit longer though! xxx

  • I’ve always preferred my nails to be square with rounded corners so I’m not to sure where I fall in this debate. 😛

  • cat & tonic

I can’t move past the classic square tip – still find anything too round to be Nana-esque! Will be keeping a close eye on how yours turn out 🙂

  • Almond is much more flattering, but I think some people look amazing with square!

  • Ana Rita Mendes

I prefer almond! I think it suits me more, but square looks great on some people 🙂

  • I prefer almond too but I do get sick of it sometimes. I want to grow them out long to the claw nails (a little tacky but I’ve been wanting to try the trend) but I’m too impatient to grow them out THAT much.

  • Britt Cherry

    I think I prefer the almond. 🙂

  • Lucy

I definitely prefer almond/oval -much more feminine and elegant. Square nails can look a little chavvy.

  • Megan

Right now, my nails look like your second picture. It’s like a rounded edged square if that make sense haha. I find for natural shorter nails, it’s easier to just file them square. But for falsies, I love the long almond ones. There’s something really sexy and feminine about it. I have yet to try that out on myself though!

  • Lauren

    Definitely almond- much more natural!

  • Victoria Reilly

100% an almond girl, mainly because my nails grow a reaaaaaaaally nice rounded shape. It’s also more flattering on my chunky little fingers!

  • Kate

I prefer my nails in an almond shape

  • Icingontheface

Definitely an almond girl! Rounded tips fits my finger shape so much better than square. The few times that I have tried to go square I find that the edges break or split a lot more easily; which usually isn’t a problem for me.

  • RosemaryMint

Almond shape for shure, that’s my natural shape! Plus, it’s a lot more flattering than the artificial harsh square shape because it makes your fingers and hand more elegant!

  • Ruby@TotalModisch

I like square nails, but mine are more rounded than square! x

  • florenceandmary

I’ve only just taken my acrylic nails off so my nails are currently doing their own thing and I’m just learning how to file my own nails again! Thank god for the Leighton Denny crystal nail file though – it makes filing so easy!

  • I prefer square cut but now that I’ve seen almond, I might give it a go. I’ve never been a fan of rounded nail’s in the past. I’m currently letting my natural nail’s grow after year’s of acrylic and unfortunately I have to cover them up with polish because they look awful naturally but lucky it’s winter I can wear gloves most day’s to cover them if they’re naked so once they’re back to nailicious I’ll try almond, thanks for the post.

  • Stacey

I’ve always has almond cut nails since I was little and I love them that way. I have tried the square, but I find it depends on the persons hands, my hands don’t suit the square look but my friends have square nails and they look great. I suppose it’s what you prefer. 😀

  • Bambi Maklina

I have stubby little fingers and an almond shape makes them look *almost* elegant!

Well I am pretty grim person when come to fingernails my finger are not straight especially the tallest finger what ever is call I do anything to be more more feminine. I try but it’s not working. A lot times I pick the wrong shade of nail polish. It’s pretty frustrating. I don’t know what to do?
