Salt Spray Selection

Salt sprays? You tried ’em? After having my first spritz of the stuff a year or so ago now, courtesy of the cult favourite Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray, they now rule the roost in my haircare supplies and often come into play as my sole styler of choice (bar a little of Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray here and there). They have the amazing ability to turn freshly washed, annoyingly slick and smooth locks into something a little messy, à la Mossy. Like that’s how your hair looked when you fell out of bed this morning; a little wave, a little grit, sorta like second day hair in a bottle. So here’s my salt spray selection for when I want my hair to look like I haven’t done anything at all…

Best for a bit of va-va-voom: Philip B Maui Wowie Beach Mist – £22 – from Cult Beauty. The clue’s in the description here – it’s the best volumiser of the bunch. I focus it on the roots to really get some lift, and I like that you can be pretty liberal without things feeling weighty at all.

Best for authentic sea-scrunch: Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray – £21.50 – from Space NK. It’s the original and one that I always end up going back to, especially in the summer months. It creates much more of a sea battered look than the others so lends itself as a beach bag must-have.

Best for some wave with a whiff: Lee Stafford Beach Babe Sea Salt Spray – £7.49 – from Boots. Lee Stafford’s highly perfumed offering will always take me back to my teenage years and this is no different. I’d recommend not getting too trigger happy with this, but a light mist gives the right dose of texture and teasing.

Best for a gritty texture: Fudge Salt Spray – £7.44 – from Boots. I find this to be the most drying of the bunch, really adding some serious texture into proceedings. Again it’s one to be a little conservative on the spritzing with but with a Pina Colada scent and nailing that two-day old hair thing, it’s one to consider.

Best for all-round beachy-ness: Sachajuan Ocean Mist – £18 – from Cult Beauty. My favourite. Not too drying, too sticky or crunchy. It just secretly blends into the hair, fattening follicles and beefing everything up without looking too product laden. It does wonders for my waves too. Full rave here.

The same hair routine recipe goes for all five. Load-up from the salt spray selection while hair is still damp after rinsing, roughly blow dry, keep away from the comb and juzch into place when everything’s dry. A beach babe bonce is just a spray (or ten) away.
