Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

When I posted about my purchase of this on Instagram the comments mimicked a poll on peoples preference to Marmite. The Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is obviously a ‘love it/hate it’ kind of thing. Sophie loves it (my justification for picking it up), but there are a fair few of you out there that don’t. When this kind of divide occurs it almost makes me want to try a product more, I want to know what camp I side with. So where do I stand?

Here’s the thing, I’ve never really been one for sponges, which may mean I was already a bit bias on this one pre-purchase. I must also note that I’ve never tried the Beauty Blender so can’t give a side-by-side comparison. The sponge is designed to be used, damp or dry, to apply, blend and buff in your base. There’s a domed end for all-over application, a flat side for larger areas and a tip to get in all the nooks and crannies. The shape works. It’s more the function that I can’t get on with. The spread of product was limited, I began to get elbow ache from tapping halfway through putting on my foundation (a major sign that I need up my arm exercise from just more than reaching into my fridge on an hourly basis) and the end result, to me, just looked a little heavy. I’ve tried it with my two favourites – Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua – and with both I just felt like I got a more natural, even and dewy finish using my fingers or my ol’ fave, Real Techniques Buffing Brush.

But all is not lost. There is one redeeming feature of this orange egg-like thing which means that it will be sticking around in my stocks. It’s great at tapping in concealer. Sometimes I find a brush just wipes away the coverage I need to hide away my blue-toned bags and using a finger can feel heavy handed. However the tipped side of this thing steps up to the plate; blending, yet covering in equal measures.

For concealer it’s a winner, but for foundation? I’ll be sticking to my own 10 digits thank you very much.
