My Running Playlist

When I mentioned the inclusion of Blu Cantrell on my running playlist in my latest fitness update, the most thumbs-ed up comment came from Steph who said, “Can I just say that now I feel a post sharing your running playlist may be in order. You can’t just name drop Blu Cantrell and leave us hanging…Inquiring minds must know!“. Well Steph, this one goes out to you and fellow inquiring minds. I must add a bit of a disclaimer here that music really isn’t my forte and hasn’t been since the ’90’s when I used to compile my own mix tapes by recording snippets of songs off the radio. So my tastes are pretty old school, mainstream and booty-shaking (whenever I get asked what genre of music I like best ‘booty-shaking’ is always my answer). It’s also worth noting that I listen to the same playlist, in the same order, each time I go running. This might seem a little dry for some, but I now know by whichever song is playing what kind of mileage I’m up to which is a good motivator for me. So without further ado, welcome to my running playlist:

Badman Riddim by Vato Gonzalez – Sorta angry and high paced, this gets things rolling.

Beautiful by Snoop Dogg – The first mile is always the hardest for me, so I really need Pharrell in my ear telling me that I’m beautiful, ok?

Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke – I have no idea how this song even made it on here, because I’m really not a fan. However I somehow believe that the faster I run, the faster it will be over.

Breathe by Blu Cantrell – A audio reminder to breathe, which is always handy. But I seriously love this song. Like, love. I always try and mime the Sean Paul rap because it’s my favourite bit.

Can’t Hold Us Down by Christina AguileraTUNE. I don’t think there’s anything else I can say.

Clique by Kanye West, Jay Z and Big Sean – A good beat to run to – not too fast or too slow. Plus the Kanye rap always makes me laugh for some reason.

Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake – My favourite J.T song. My vocal abilities by this point are limited so I just manage to mutter the ‘OOOhhhh’ bits that Timbaland chimes in with.

Drop It Like It’s Hot by Snoop Dogg – Fun fact – I know the all the words to this song off by heart. I’ve never seen shock in Mark’s face like the first time I rapped my way through this.

Get Lucky by Daft Punk – This is my ‘Anna you can do it’ jazzy, happy, feel-good song. A pep up just when I need it.

Hold On, We’re Going Home by Drake – Nearing the end of my run by this point now, the hook of this song seems very appropriate.

Hungry Eyes by Eric Carmen – My favourite bit of Dirty Dancing (ending aside) is the montage to this clip, so that combined with the fact I’m nearly finished makes me a very happy chappy.

No Scrubs by TLC – The anthem of my youth. I always try and finish things off before the Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes rap comes in so I can catch my breath and mime my heart away.

I know, I know. Someone will be snapping me up for a DJ gig before you know it…

  • I have to listen to house music when I work out. Nothing get’s me more motivated than that. Drake would make me want to sit down with a cuppa 😀

  • Ella Turney

I love your taste Anna! I’ve been trying to get into running but it just won’t happen, maybe your awesome tunes will help!;) xx

  • You’re a brave girl running to these songs Anna! I deffs need more uptempo tunes to keep me going, great post though!

  • TLC is such a classic! I have recently rediscovered their song “Creep”. I am going to have to add no scrubs back to my library.

  • Love the tracks! I’d say they are brilliant for running 🙂

  • Francisca Ferreira

    great ones ehheh

  • lianne

omg, so pleased I’m not alone in my 90’s throw back music!! There are actually some 90’s gym playlists that I downloaded to get my inspiration. For a stretch / cool down I love green days – good riddance, or goo goo dolls iris. For running I love Prince’s Kiss, mel n kim respectable (reminds me of infant school playground!!) , salt n pepa push it, Teenage dirtbag!!! love it all!!

  • Leannemariexo

Thanks for sharing. I need to update my gym/running playlist, so now I have a few songs to add to the list!

I always get strange looks when I’m running along to Daft Punk’s Get Lucky. That’s when I break out the silly sideways running, side nodding and ridiculously happy grin on my face! I’m convinced that a good tune can get me through the most painful of miles!

  • This is really useful! It’s unfortunate that I spend 90% of my time making the playlist and the 10% running, but I think music is so important to get you going and help you keep moving till the end!

  • Good tunes! If I ever try and get the urge to start working out I am going to look at these lols 🙂

  • Pretty epic tunes in all honesty, Anna! I was all for the R’n’B vibes then you throw in some wicked Eric Carmen! Serious brownie points xx

  • LeeLee

    Great playlist, Anna.

  • I really enjoyed reading that hahaha, Hungry Eyes being a highlight. I think if you could see someones running playlist, you can see who they truly are. Everyone is motivated by very different things!

  • Carrie Ward

Anything by Daft Punk is good for a running compilation ‘One more time’ is my ultimate get your butt moving song. I totally get the rapping thing esp while running, I have a huge spot in my heart for Busta Ryhmes, I cannot explain it, I only ever listen to him when I run/workout he is just an intrinsic part of it. Also Dizzie Rascal ‘Holiday’ is a great one for rapping/running along too…..

  • Oh goodness me you’ve just literally made me remember some songs I used to be crazy about back then- so good! Definitely enjoy playlist making more than I enjoy running but tiny steps and all that!
    Jade x

  • THIS IS THE GREATEST PLAYLIST OF ALL TIME. I completely forgot about that Sean Paul/Blu Cantrell song – I thought you were referring to Hit Em Up Style, which is also great, but not as great as Breathe, oh my Godddd. Memories! And JT! Snoop x 2! Perfection right here. I’d hire you.

P.S Might actually start running purely to have an excuse to listen to this playlist.

    Brodie Jay

  • Manouk

The faster I run, the faster it will be over hahaha! I love CA and JT too, but not really for running. I like break up songs best for running (dont ask me why)

    WOMANOUK (beauty and portrait

  • Imagine yourself running away from Robin Thicke and his misogynistic rape anthem and you’re bound to break your time records.

  • Anna

I so need to make a workout playlist! even though I am the worst at making playlists haha i go for dancey or rock music but often I don’t make a long enough playlist and never update and get really sick of the songs haha gonna try some of your songs x

  • Asha Kiggins

Hey everyone! I know these comments are annoying but I’ve recently started a blog, in which I’ve so far talked about summer activities and fitness motivation as well as a tag but in teh futire I hope to put up recipes and maybe some beauty bits too!Any support would be much appreciated! Thanks for your time!

    Asha xx

  • I’m just getting into running! Wondering if there is any apps that you use when your running? I’ve started using Nike+ on my phone anyone else use this? Or are there better ones?

Totally agree with all these music choices! Being a 90’s kid is the best! – You didmiss off Wannabe – Spice Girls!!

  • Ceri

This is genius! Some serious old school songs here, think I might have to add these to my running playlist. I should probably add that although I have a running playlist, the frequency that I actually go running is basically zero. But hey, I can pretend..! x

  • Natalie B

Great playlist and OMG ‘Can’t Hold Us Down’ is legendary status!! xx

  • Emma

Was in need for some new tunes, this is exactly what I needed! And rediscovered some songs I totally forgot about, you should share your playlists more often!

  • No scrubs, such a tune! You really love rap don’t you hahaha x

  • Love the list – I would totally add Get Busy Sean Paul, gets you moving! x

  • Ami S.

Your song choices + commentary = made my morning.

  • I’m totally hiring you as DJ for my next party! No Scrubs should be the official anthem of everyone’s youth haha

  • Alexandra

I can totally relate to your taste in music, thanks for sharing 🙂

  • Cool playlist, music helps so much when running! Can be a tad boring otherwise.

  • Snoop Dog is definitely on my work out playlist as well. It’s called ‘Werrrkkk it’ on my phone, hahaha. x

  • alice bea ☮

haha this post was hilarious, we should all be ashamed of listening to blurred lines!

  • Your explanation for Blurred Lines made me laugh, and JT is a favorite of mine, too, girl. I feel like Justin could motivate me to do just about anything I need to do. I might need some “Happy,” too. I need to start running, so maybe Pharrell can help me out!

  • Drop it like it’s hot belongs on anyone’s ipod whether they like rap or not, haha. It definitely is a great song to run to!

    Brittany |

  • I love all these songs! Glad to see someone with similar taste to me.

    Ella xx

  • PeonyandPeach

    1. No Scrubs was also the anthem of my youth.

    2. I too created some awesome mix tapes by recording songs off the radio.

    3. When I was 12 my email address/msn name was ‘bootyshakinbabe’. Yes, really!

  • Hahaha, thanks for the shoutout 🙂 This was perfect, there’s a jam sesh on the horizon.

  • Heather Newlin

Thank you so much for this! I always seem to agree with your music taste from your videos, so its great to get some tips on what else you like. Will definitely be adding all of these on spotify. xx

  • Jocelyn

OoOh I LOVE Cry Me a River!

  • Galina

A playlist after my own heart! the only thing I would add to make it perfect is some Nelly haha! Hot in hurr is my favorite booty shakin’ song. I’m permanently stuck in the early 2000’s.

  • I’ve never seen a Dirty Dancing song on a running playlist, kudos. It’s one of my top 5 songs ever!

  • I like how everything links to something except Blurred Lines

  • Christine

Something about knowing what a person listens to while running is just so interesting to me!! Great picks Anna! I would love to see more installments of this whole fitness ‘series’? xx

  • Anna, your new-found running routine is SO inspiring! I consider myself more of an “aspirational” runner, as I am signed up for a half marathon in two weeks and have been figuring out how to do as little running as possible to train for it. LOL. But anyways, my favorite album to run to is Somewhere Somehow by We The Kings! Definitely check them out 🙂

    xx Sally

  • JT <3 Cry me a River is one of my favourite songs of all time! ;D

  • Rachel Bloom

Awesome playlist Anna! You should make a spotify playlist so we can all go and follow it 🙂 x

  • Ana Margarida Guilherme

Seeing that you mentioned “Dirty Dancing” (my all time favourite movie) maybe in the near future you could do a Top 5 Favourite Movies?! Awesome playlist 🙂

  • Hungry Eyes, what a song!

  • Except from Blurred Lines (ugh) I’m downloading all of this, now!
