My Face Base Wardrobe

My face base habit has a got a little bit out of control. It wasn’t until I was explaining my makeup collection to my friends and heard myself say the phrase, ‘Well the top drawer is for heavy-coverage foundations, the next one is for lighter ones, then I’ve got one full of tinted moisturisers….’ saw their jaws drop and tailed off. Yes I’m Anna, and I have a foundation problem. Surprisingly it’s the step that I shrug off the most, but bottles of the stuff dominate my stash, so I’ve had a bit of a clear out – my friend’s faces are now positively beaming (and looking pretty flawless) – and I reckon if push came to shove I could live out the rest of my days with just four key cover-ups in my possession to mix, match and buff on. Let’s christen this the ‘Face Base Wardrobe’…

The All-Rounder: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 6. My current go-to with a whole ode to itself here. Full coverage, but sheered out and slicked on with fingers can achieve a skin-like finish with a balanced equation of glow and matte. I sweep on with a brush for times of skin SOS and evenings out.

The Goooood Skin Day Companion: Jouer Lumunizing Moisture Tint in Pearl. On the rare ocassion that I’ve completed my morning skincare routine and let out a satisfied grunt at my complexion, then this comes into play. A light, barely-there tint that evens out any minor niggles and wipes on just the right level of dewy. The other thing I like about this formula is that it’s a good mixer making it a versatile piece in my wardrobe; a blob in with the Giorgio Armani gives a good dose of glow for ‘damn I stayed up till 2am watching Jim & Pam best bits on YouTube and now I’m tired’ days. Guilty.

The ‘Waste of Makeup’ Foundation: Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation in 52. For days when I’m just running errands, or will be back home and slipped into my PJ’s whipping my makeup off in two hours time. I want to be brave, but I just need a bit of something. I put down my bottle of £30+ flawlessifier and reach for this instead, and you know what? I doubt anyone bar me accompanied with a magnifying mirror can tell that I’m not sporting a pricier offering.

The One I Wish Would Never End: Jemma Kidd Light As Air Foundation in 02. Even just typing about my long-lost discontinued love makes me feel a little weepy. This foundation was (ah past tense *wails*) the definition of perfection; dewy but long-lasting and still where you striped it on 10 hours later, medium coverage and just darn beautiful. It’s impossible to find – and trust me I stalk eBay daily for it – but I have the teeniest tiniest amount left in my tube that I squeeze out for special occasions only. Sadface.

Now this doesn’t mean that four foundations now rule my base roost exclusively, but I’m working on it. And maybe it’s time to seriously cut down on the whole three-drawer set up. I can see the glow off my friend’s complexions already…

  • I would love to try the Serum Version since I didn´t like the original either. 😀

  • Anna Blush

I’m going to cave and purchase Luminous Silk! I’ve heard soooo many amazing reviews that the time has definitely come to make a bottle my own. Your friends are very lucky to receive lot’s of goodies! x

  • Ruby

I have to try Luminous Silk, heard amazing things about it!

  • I thought I was bad…until I saw your collection haha. Granted you’ve got some good ones in there! I’ve not tried any of those though as I like to stick to what I know but I definitely want to try the Armani foundation!

Great post! What about the Laura Mercier Tinted Mosturiser you raved about so much, how does it fit in your base wardrobe? I have mine also in the oil-free formula and adore it! That and my YSL touche eclat foundation are by definite go-tos. I have tried so so many different bases, but thats the thing about them, you have to try them on your own skin to know if it is love material! Love your blog! Saw your video with Lilly yesterday! SO SO good!!!!! XX

  • Silvia Quirós

Great selection, I love the regular Healthy Mix and is great too, thanks for sharing!

  • Rosie von Waldherr

I am the contrary of you..I have no foundations..well, I just got one from a drugstore, but that’s just because it was the only one that was light enough for me…oh well..

I’m usually quite foundation shy, but the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk has been my go-to for years. Thanks for showing it off for the amazing product it really is!

  • Anissa Marie B

Wow, I don’t even own a single foundation! Just one compact powder but I’m trying to expand the *collection*:
Everyone seems to mention the Healthy Mix Serum but the Rimmel Wake me up is supposed to be great, too! Now I’m confused of what to buy! Help please? 🙂 xx

  • Katie

Oh so many people mourn Light as Air! Glad I never started a love affair.

  • RIP Jemma Kidd Light As Air 🙁 it was and still is my favourite foundation. x

  • Maqua

I really like the regular (old) Bourjois Healthy Mix!

  • Bella

Tut tut, you never bought Nars Sheer Glow like you were going to, else it would have been up there ;). The nars tinted moisturiser is the bomb too…

  • Hannah

I love the bourois foundations, especially the 8 hour sleep effect, I honestly ifnd myself using them more than my by terry sheer expert or chantecaille future skin. Nars Sheerglow is nice, too. A sheer to medium, buildable coverage, with good longevity and pretty lightweight feeling.
Also, funny that you should mention the light as air in this post, because I literally just happened upon a blog sale selling one in 02 and one in 01. Here’s the link:!/2013/05/blog-sale.html
    Hope it helps a little!

  • Alina

whar ever happened to the Dior BB cream that you love so much?

  • Beth

YES to Jim and Pam, I find myself quoting The Office daily now! I’m not at all over it. Fab four picks x

  • Was so gutted when I came to the end of my Jemma Kidd Light as Air Foundation, still haven’t been able to throw away the bottle lol. Really want to try the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, it’s on my list! xx

    Heels forever

  • I have the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum but it’s so yellow it makes me look jaundiced or orange depending on the light! Gutted as so many people love it. I really want to try the Luminous Silk foundation as it’s so raved about… I’m not brave enough to go for anything as sheer as the Jouer tinted moisturiser!

  • I want to try the Matte version of the jour tinted moisturiser!

  • Celina

I’m interested in trying the Jouer Matte Moisture Tint since my skin is more on the oily side. I wish Jouer products would be more readily available!

  • Jess and Erin

I give you a week until another foundation sneaks in haha. Admitting you have a problem is the first step

    Jess x

  • alice bea ☮

I just reviewed the bourjois one as well, its amazing!

  • Amber Hunter

I have yet to find my skin staples! I’m saving up for two foundations, a full coverage and a lighter one. I’m leaning towards smashbox studio skin for special occasions and diorskin nude for when I want a bit of a glow! Have you tried either? I have drier skin so I prefer ones that hydrate!
    xx Amber

  • Nina V

I ran out of Bourjois Healty mix serum a couple of months ago and tried some other stuff but I have to get back to it. I just love it.

I love the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation!! If I’m going to wear foundation during the day, this is the one I reach for; because when apply it by swirling, dabbing & patting with my fingers it ends up looking like a second skin – and with the matching concealer I managed to wear it out clubbing the other night, and with a good face powder it stayed on the whole night!

Pretty good value for money for something that feels so high end.

  • AuntyMiff

Have you tried Fragrance Direct for the Jemma Kidd? I’ve had quite a few JK products off there so fingers crossed you might be lucky!

    Charlotte – xx

  • Julia

I feel really bad about Jemma Kidd products. I was always so eager to try her products and looked at her site regularly. When I found out it was going to be discontinued, I was heartbroken. 🙁 I hope someone decided to stock up on them and sold them on Amazon or something. 🙁

  • mariam_93

I have the Bourjois foundation and even though I’m not a huge foundation fanatic I think it is really nice! I really want to try the Jemma Kid out but like you said it is near extinct!
