Luggable Hassle-Free Snacking

In my attempt to fill my belly with slightly better choices than my previous menu of cookies, pancakes and pizzas (man – does that sound goooood), I’ve stumbled across some pre-made, but-not-too-nasty-filled snacks that fill a hole in times of need. In an ideal world I’d whip them up myself in my humongous kitchen with its own little island and a two-door fridge, but in reality it’s a titchy little place with a mini fridge and sometimes I’m just a little short on time. It’s an area of my cupboards that I dip in every other day or so, lob one of the offerings in my bag and gobble down on the tube. Perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth without consuming a shedload of refined sugar and other no no’s. Here are some things that I have learnt from healthier snacking:

1. You must like dates.

2. You must like nuts.

3. If you don’t like dates and/or nuts then you’re pretty much screwed.

Just an observation, but if you disagree with points one and two, then you may not wish to take on the following recommendations…

BEST FORWhen you want chocolate – Nakd Bars. My go-to for when I’m in the mood for a sweet treat. There are variations on the cocoa flavour, but the orange one is my favourite. FYI the ingredients list on the back mean that these would be an easy peasy one to imitate.

BEST FORAfter a workout – Bounce Natural Energy Balls. Apparently these are full of some kind of protein stuff – whey protein? I recognise the name from a huge tub of stuff the boyf stores in our cupboards and never uses –  which makes them a good post-sweaty stuff snack. If you like peanut butter, then you’ll love the peanut version and man are these filling.

BEST FORFilling up – Clif Bars. Oh my word – these are goooood. The White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut ones are just the mutts nuts and the peanut flavour is a safe bet too. Chewy, sweet, filling goodness. These are more of an oat-y base over the others so if you’re not a dried fruit lover then this one is your guy.

I reckon that covers most bases. Any others to add into the snack box?

I love Clif bars! I’m not a fan of nuts or dried fruit and I recently discovered them at my naturopath and I do agree that they are delicious and filling too! Perfect snack on the go if you’re starving!

  • Beccy

I just love the Nakd bars – I keep them in my drawer at work so avoid the vending machine! Thanks for the other recommendations – will try these out!

Definitely agree that you have to like dates and nuts, it seems to be what most healthier sweet treats are made from. Really want to try Nakd bars, have heard such good things x

  • Sophie Ballinger

I love Nakd bars, I always have one in my school bag for when I get a bit peckish! Plus being a vegetarian, it’s nice to know exactly what’s in there 🙂 xx

  • I had a nakd bar for the first time the other day and it was really tasty but 14g of sugar per bar is waaaaay too much for a casual snack for me as I try to keep to 15g a day or less of refined sugars. QworterLifeCrisis

    • Sophie

The sugar in Nakd bars isn’t refined, it’s sugar that is found naturally in it’s ingredients(fruits/dried fruits).

      • Oh I guess that’s not quite as bad as I thought then. Still I’d probably rather go with a banana or something but I don’t have much of a sweet tooth anyway x

  • Helen Jane ♥

I have seen the bounce balls in Waitrose and always fancied giving them a go! I do love nakd xxx

    Pink Polka Dot & Popcorn

  • Oh i love these, they are so tasty.

the nakd apple crunch bars are my fave – highly recommend!

  • Mm I love the bounce balls! I usually go for an apple, a tsp of peanut butter or a small protein shake for my snacks 🙂 xx

  • Pip Johnstone

A packet of dried cranberries normally does the trick for me!

  • Jessica Thoma

I really like the Nakd Bars but I feel like I can’t stick to healthier snacking.. When I crave chocolate I will most likely go and have chocolate.. Yes, that’s how determined I am.. haha 😀 x

  • Hmm they all sound very delicious x Savannah

  • Libby Toogood

I love all of these choices, but I have yet to try bounce energy balls! I also love graze box punnets, any raw nut, snackable fruit (apple, pear) and raw juice!

  • Kayla

Where do you buy the bounce and cliff varieties? x

  • If you like those Bounce Protein Balls you need to try the ‘Coconut and Macadamia’ It is so amazing!

  • I love to snack on some cut up veg (carrots, cucumbers) and some sort of nut butter, at the moment i’m loving Almond Butter.

  • Molly B

pop a few dates in the microwave and add a tablespoon of nut butter and a tablespoon of cocoa, mash it all together and roll into a ball and voila! much more affordable nakd bar (I don’t know about in the UK but in Australia these things are damn expensive!)

  • Milimal

I’ve started making my own granola bars and they are really simple to make! Recipe over here:

  • Gem

You should try the nakd cola raisins – they taste just like good cola bottles ! Perfect when you’re craving sweeties !

  • nueyork

I really want to try Cliff bars and they’ve recently started stocking them near me. The flavours sound like chocolate bars – definitely a good thing!

  • Dee Grizzle

I don’t know if they’re available where you are, but Pro Bars are my favorite.

  • Grainne

Quest Protein Bars, low sugar, low carbs, gluten free

  • I hate most bars too! You have to try Tanka bars! Here are a few other good snacks I love

  • Parisian To Be

I’m not sure if you have them in the UK, but Larabars are fantastic. They’re just fruit and nuts–that’s it–but come in amazing and delicious flavors. Again, like you said, you must like fruit and nuts, though.

Also, someone in the comments below me recommended Quest bars. I wanted to let you know that I’m not a fan, both for the ingredients and the taste. It’s worth a try, though; a lot of people adore them. Can you tell talking about bars is one of my favorite topics? x

    • Kat Horrocks

Nakd bars are like the UK equivalent of Lara bars 🙂

  • Kat Horrocks

Love all the bars you mentioned! Trek are also good bars, similar to Nakd bars except they have little Soya crispies – adds a lot more protein, they are a lot more filling and it tastes like youre eating a chewy bar with rice crispies in :O amazing!

  • Kate

I need to stock up on things like this! Love me some guilt-free snacking. x

I love Nakd bars, but I really want to try the Cliff bars they sound great.

  • Oh man, dates are too sweet for me and I’m allergic to nuts 🙁

  • Charlotte Brady

I love the Nakd bars, however i have never even heard of the cliff bars!

  • Shannon Beer

Quest bars are amazing, especially the white chocolate & raspberry and cookies & creams flavours. I bake them in the oven for 10 mins and they are so soft and gooey!

  • Isabelle McWilliam

Love Nakd bars! I currently work for The Nutribox, a UK based company who provide organisations with healthy snacks for their employees and we source a few other brands that i’m sure you’d love! If you’re looking for something savoury you could try ‘Oloves’ (snack packed olives) or Happy Kale (kale crisps) or if you just like to stick to sweet then ‘Raw Nibbles’, Nookie & Pulsin do great chocolately things and Clearly Scrumptious do amazing packets of dried fruit like Strawberries, Apples and Peaches!

  • Kristy Swithenbank

I try to look for gluten free stuff since I can’t stomach whey protein.

    • Claire

Hi, just wanted to point out that whey protein is from milk and has nothing to do with gluten which is from wheat, barley and rye. If whey protein doesn’t agree with you then maybe you have a problem with dairy?

      • Kristy Swithenbank

Sorry, I said it wrong. I am lactose intolerant.

  • Lauren S

mmmmmmm tempting, i love healthy snacks that fill me up and taste yummy ! I made some granola bars last night with fruit and nuts, plus some carrot sticks to go always work as does a pot of almonds, pumpkin seeds and raisins.

  • Janine Maral

    ohhhh clif bars.. my weakness!

  • Hey thanks for great article… I am a big fan of your blog! I was munching on a Clif bar the other day and my trainer friend told me that they are really intended for endurance athletes (42g carbs, 22g sugar). Better to fill up on ‘good fats’ such as those in 9 Bars – the peanut one is my favourite. Hope this helps! Also love the Creative Nature bars they are fruit based and the tropical one is amazing. Keep up the great work. @therosieglow

  • Jo Fisher

I adore Nakd. Not too keen on their chocolate flavoured options but I love Cashew Cookie and Gingerbread!
