How I’m Caring For My Slightly More Damaged Hair

A couple of week’s back now I went from (kinda) virgin, ‘never been touched with permanent colour’ locks, to hair that has seen it all – colour, bleach, box dye, bleach again – the lot. Poor thing. I went to the hairdressers with hopes of honey hues, ended up coming out a little warmer and orange-toned than I expected, panicked and threw on a box dye which turned it a shade of Simon Cowell black, before I booked to get it professionally reversed and restored as closely back to my natural colour as they could get it. Phew. Having never really suffered with hair dramz before I can safely say that I’m now a bit more prepared and own a few hat options incase this ever happens again, though I’m firmly #TeamBrunette right now and can’t see that changing anytime soon.

Previously my haircare routine was one that positively encouraged dryness. My scalp had the tendency to get greasy just a day after washing and my follicles were at their happiest when stuck down onto my head, so it was all about encouraging a matte texture and coaxing my hair out of its natural positioning. Now, things are a little different and though I feel I’ve got pretty lucky in the hair dying stakes as it doesn’t feel too dry, I can definitely feel the need for a bit more nourishment in the regime and a prompt that it’s time to take a step back from the über clarifying shampoos.

So what’s my shower stocked up with these days? Well right now I’m having a bit of a love affair with the Kérastase Reistance Therapiste Soin Conditioner and Bain Shampoo. It’s a bit of a strange system that flips hair washing on its head (pun most definitely intended) in that you apply the conditioner before the shampoo with the thinking that shampooing after conditioning means that your hair is nourished without being weighed down; as the shampoo removes any excess of the conditioner so you’re left with exactly what you need. I was unsure at first, but my locks are soft and not heavy at all, bizarrely it works. Plus, it smells AH-mazing. The Serum in the range is great as well and it’s fun to apply because it’s a double pump that dispenses equal amounts of serum and cream. I’m way too easily amused.

Now that’s not to say that I’ve completely turned my back on my old routine. The Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo still makes the odd appearance every two weeks or so, just to get rid of any build up as I’m loving using a shedload of styling products to see just how wide I can tease my hair into staying. To oomph-up the wide-ness I’m of course still loving the Oribe Dry Texturising Spray – I’ve never used it more and I dread to think how many bottles I’m going to go through with this short-hair stint – and the Colab Extreme Volume Dry Shampoo in Monaco is great at supporting volume too. However, if it’s just hold that I want then I use the Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray, otherwise known as ‘The Hairspray That Never Stops Spraying‘. See? Coloured hair or not, I’m always going to be in to big hair. The higher the hair, the closer to heaven and all that…
