Face Atelier Ultra Foundation

I’m starting to think that I may be romanticising my love affair with Jemma Kidd’s Light As Air a little. I search eBay on a daily basis for a bottle, often get a little sad about its discontinued status and with my last drop deposited the hunt for its replacement has never been hotter. Next on my list of possible dupes to try, test and match against my ticklist of why the Light As Air was so awesome (ridiculously long-lasting, good but natural looking coverage, and a balanced dewy/matte finish if you were wondering) is Face Atelier’s Ultra Foundation. One I sampled ages ago but have fond memories of, so in the shade Sand went to my Cult Beauty basket.

Does it compare to my fondly discontinued love? Well, sorta. The coverage builds from light to full in a few sweeps and the longevity is there. The finish does that whole ‘matte where you want it and dewy on the high points‘ thing, but there’s one tickbox which is left empty – blendabilty. The L.A.A had an almost watery texture, I got my technique down to the point where I could slap it on without a mirror, but the Face Atelier is much thicker, requiring more smoothing and attention than I usually bother with. It’s definitely one of those formulas that requires a dual blend, first with brush, then fingers to make it truly melt and become your second skin.

Will it be entered into the daily rotation or strewn to the retired bases drawer? I think it’s a daily rotation choice, a dewier version of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, and with no SPF it’s a good evening offering. Drier skinned gals stay away (purely for blending reasons – things could get a little cakey), but it’s one for the more normal to combined skin among us to look into. £32 from Cult Beauty.

I love your blog Vivianna! Have you ever tried Clarins Skin Illusion foundation or Clinique Even Better foundation? I’m using both of these (liquid) at the moment. The Clinique has better coverage and is probably longer-wearing. Both very natural, I’d love to hear what you think of them!

I’m actually a little envious you tired the Jenna Kidd one as for some reason I didn’t bother. Think I’ll stay away from this though! Want stand a candy face…

Would u like to do a video about Foundations comparison or a sort of top 5 or 10? I trust u more than anyone else

Ouch the price point! Is it better than Giorgio Armani silk foundations?

For a great, high street version to try I’d greatly recommend Bourjois’ Healthy Mix foundation. The enrichment of fruit extracts really nourish the skin and give it a beautiful scent (I know that shouldn’t be important with a base, but it smells so fresh and lovely!) and has wonderful, buildable coverage that gives a great dewy glow. I’m completely biased on this, though, as it is the only foundation I’ve ever found that truly suits my skin tone as well as sitting well on my combination skin, but I think it would be worth a shot!

Want to try this now! XX Emmi

  • This is great in warm weather too – it seems to move with the skin without actually disappearing or sinking into fine lines (not that you have any, but I sure do!). It’s an old favourite of mine, but I haven’t bought it for a while because it’s so pricey!

It’s a shame it didn’t quite live up to it, and I have dry skin so I don’t think it would be for me 🙁 x

I might want to look into this because I have combination skin but this might not be one to go for in those dry, cold winter months for me.

Your skin looks lovely! Im always hesitant about ordering foundations online, how do you know which shade to choose?

  • Lia

Anna, the Jemma Kidd foundation is still available here in the US via Amazon. If you can’t find a way to order it yourself, I’d be happy to ship it to you!

I have dry skin but since I need to lighten every foundation I use, I always mix the Face Atelier Ultra (in the white shade) with a moisturizing foundation like the YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat – works perfectly 🙂

  • thanks for the review

I have incredibly dry skin but I love it! You have to use a damp blending sponge to apply. Then it’s perfect!
