CHANEL’s Answer to Misty Rock

By Terry’s Ombre Blackstar in Misty Rock is a very special product. When Lily and I did our #BeautyChatLIVE tour it was the first product to sell out at every store and it’s one of those colours that looks good on everyone, whilst looking completely different on everyone. On Lily it can be quite lilac-y looking, on Tanya it’s more frosty and on me I feel like it comes off quite taupey. It’s just a really interesting shade. I swatch it on my hand and then spend the next five minutes twisting my fist around in the light desperately trying to pin down a way to describe the shade and failing. I love it and on days when I’m not sure exactly what I want to do on my eyes I know that I can’t go wrong with this and a bit of MAC’s Eye Kohl in Teddy along the lashline. Then CHANEL came along and shook things up with a Misty Rock dupe…

Enter the Stylo Eyeshadow Fresh Effect Eyeshadow in 147 Caroube, a limited edition (I think) drop from their SS15 range. It’s the same set-up as the By Terry; a cream eyeshadow housed in a twist-up chunky pencil form and the formula is the same: opaque, smooth and long-lasting. In the shade these two colours look very similar (By Terry on the left in the swatch above, CHANEL on the right), like a taupe with a mauve undertone, but put them in the light and the lilac shimmers in the By Terry transform it into a completely different colour; the absence of sheen in the CHANEL one is the only thing it lacks.

So it’s not an exact dupe, but comparisons aside I actually think I prefer CHANEL’s offering. Controversial! The metallic finish is more subtle than a shimmery one and you already know how I feel about eyeshadows that have a hint of rustiness to them. Then I’ve got to mention the application. The ‘Fresh‘ in the title is a nod to the fact that it’s strangely cooling when you apply; almost like you’re taking an ice cube over your lid. Bizarre, but it feels nice. I stripe it on straight from the nib and then blend it out with a MAC 217 on the edges. I also find this to last a bit better on me than the Ombre Blackstar and I don’t even need to use primer. This persistence means you need a bit of a knack to buff it before it sets – I find it best to work on one eye at a time – but I ain’t complaining because you could fry eggs on my eyelids, so when something sticks around I’m one happy chappy.

Misty Rock will always have a special place in my heart so it’s definitely not going to be sitting in my stash unloved, but it’s definitely got some competition on those days when I’m not quite sure what colour to reach for…
