Another Week, Another Foundation Review…

Another week, another foundation review – that’s how it seems round these parts. Last week it was Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation and this week I’m talking MAC’s Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation. It’s just the time for new formula releases right now and you know how I feel about foundations. It’s a bit like Pokemon – I’ve gotta catch try ’em all. When I posted a picture of it on Instagram there were a tonne of requests for me to share my musings on this one, so – here we go…

MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation is a ‘ultra-fluid, elastic, gel-serum‘ formula according to MAC and though that sounds bizarre, it’s actually an accurate description. It’s housed in a bottle with a dropper, but unlike other dropper foundations it doesn’t feel greasy or too wet on the skin when applied. It’s £25.50 for 30ml and is available in all the usual shades (I’m a NC20).

Now let me tell you that this stuff is seriously glowy. Like real ‘want to look at your face in the mirror for half an hour‘ glowy. It didn’t cling to any of my dry patches or sit in pores and it blended in easily with a brush, though I think I prefer working it in with my fingers given the extremely runny texture. It gives a very light coverage, but the good thing about it is that it can be built up; it layers really well. The more I use it, the more it reminds me of Face & Body which is a good thing actually because I can’t use F&B cause it breaks my chin out into a mound of 1000 tiny spots that feel like stubble. Nice.

The cons here are going to be different for everyone depending on your skin type. Greasy skinned guys and girls will definitely feel the need to grab a powder and longevity isn’t going to be too great. Though I can imagine those with dry complexions will love the glow that it gives. I sit somewhere in the middle so didn’t use a powder with it and though it lasted a good six hours or so before my skin had gobbled it up for lunch (note that my pores literally drink up makeup, so this might not be the case for everyone) and it needed smoothing out with my fingers just to blur out where it had gathered around my nose. But let me tell you I was getting real up and close and personal with the mirror here so it wasn’t really that noticeable to the naked eye.

Overall it’s good stuff and I think those that like a glowy, natural-looking coverage will be a fan of this. To me it’s probably something I’d crack out more at the weekends and summer months, so I’ll be storing it up for then. Oh and if you’re interested in what colour cosmetics I’ve got on my face in the picture above then you may wish to check out tomorrow’s post. 7am GMT – be there or be square…
