Where To Eat In Brighton: The Lunch Edition

After my Where To Eat in Brighton: The Breakfast Edition post, it was about time I got stuck in with lunchtime wasn’t it? So today I’m bringing you five of my favourite places to head if I’m feeling peckish around the midday mark. In terms of what you’d like to see next, I’d obviously like to cover dinner, but I’m also thinking a coffee and juice version would be good, as well as a takeaway edition too (because I do love a good ol’ takeaway). Let me know, but in the meantime this will probably make you hungry, so do make sure you have something to snack on… 

Bagelman, various locations. Bagelman is huge in Brighton and Hove. They’ve been knocking around for years and have several locations across the city (I personally love their new store at 16 Duke Street or their Hove branch on Church Road because it’s usually a bit quieter). If you want a good bagel that’s going to leave your belly satisfied then here is where to go. It’s semi-fast food so you’re never hanging around for long and it isn’t too pricey either. I highly recommend the Chicken, Bacon & Avocado Bagel warmed up. Heaven.

Small Batch Coffee Company, various locations. If Mark is ever in charge of where we’re meeting friends or going out for lunch, this is where we end up. He loves the coffee, I love the food (yes that’s him looking very pleased with his choice of sausage roll and ciabatta roll for lunch). The cakes are seriously delicious and I’d recommend a trip slightly out of town to their Wilbury Road location as there is plenty of seating outside so you can soak up the sun and chow down on their Flourless Chocolate Cake at the same time.

Hell’s Kitchen, 4 Gardner Street, BN1 1UP. It was actually Lily that opened up my eyes to this place when she came to visit once as she’d been there before on a previous trip to B-Town and it was so damn nice. If you’re in the mood for a filling salad or hearty sandwich then you’re in luck. Some options are healthy, some not to much but it’s good value for money as they dish up seriously large portions in there. There’s no seating inside and it’s tough to get seats outside so I recommend trundling down to Pavilion Gardens and eating it there.

Wai Kika Moo Kau, 11a Kensington Gardens, BN1 4AL. My mate Sally took me here for lunch one day and I ended up having one of the best vegetarian meals of my life. Seriously incredible. The Veggie Chilli? YUM. The menu here is vegetarian but also gives vegan and gluten-free options, but if you eat anything and everything then don’t be put off because the food served here is delicious, hearty and seriously packed with flavour.

Silo, 39 Upper Gardner Street, BN1 4AN. Silo serve breakfast, lunch and dinner but I’d recommend dropping in around lunchtime to either have a cake from their heart-eye emoji inducing bakery section or a plate off their lunch menu (Mark is also a huge fan of the beer and the coffee brewed here too). This place is very cool and they aim to produce zero waste – kinda incredible. Also the staff here are lovely. It’s well worth chatting to them about the Silo story. Super passionate peeps!

Honestly, this is THE BEST cake I’ve ever made. A rich and moist Guinness cake (that’s basically just a very dense chocolate cake), with a CREAM CHEESE FROSTING. This is going to be my birthday cake of choice from now on. Recipe by @nigellalawson 🙌

INGREDIENTS FOR CAKE
250ml Guinness
250g unsalted butter 
75g cocoa powder
400g caster sugar 
150ml sour cream 
2 large eggs
1 tbsp vanilla extract
275g plain flour
2 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 

INGREDIENTS FOR THE TOPPING
300g cream cheese
150g icing sugar 
2 tsp cornflour 
125ml double cream (or whipping cream)

1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4/180°C/160°C Fan/350ºF, and butter and line a 23cm / 9 inch springform tin.

2. Pour the Guinness into a large wide saucepan, add the butter — in spoons or slices — and heat until the butter’s melted, at which time you should whisk in the cocoa and sugar. Beat the sour cream with the eggs and vanilla and then pour into the brown, buttery, beery pan and finally whisk in the flour and bicarb.

3. Pour the cake batter into the greased and lined tin and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. Leave to cool completely in the tin on a cooling rack, as it is quite a damp cake.

4. When the cake’s cold, sit it on a flat platter or cake stand and get on with the icing. Lightly whip the cream cheese until smooth, sieve over the icing sugar and cornflour and then beat to combine.

5. If using double cream, add it and beat until you have a spreadable consistency. If using whipping cream, whisk first to soft peaks, add a couple of spoonfuls into the cream cheese mixture and once this is combined, fold in the rest.
Ice the top of the black cake so that it resembles the frothy top of the famous pint.
