When You Really Don’t Want to Workout

IMG_9734

I must admit that during the past few months I’ve been pretty rotten at working out. With planning the move, actually moving, going to L.A for a week, being furniture-less and all the other excuses that I’ve come to point the blame at, getting up super early and digging out my yoga mat from the bottom of a dusty box just doesn’t sound that appealing. In reality I should be more up for it than ever; the rooms are empty and the perfect space to practice face-planting/headstands and it gives me the opportunity to relax and take a bit of time for myself that doesn’t involve comparing coffee tables online or trying to remember what box I put my V5 form in (V5 – I will find you and I will change my address and send you off). So in the past week I’ve managed to move my arse back into gear, set my alarm a little earlier than usual and I’ve enjoyed getting a bit sweaty again. I’m pretty sure I’ve written a post that’s similar to this before, but I need to practice what I preach here so I’m writing it for a second time and if you too are in a funk, then maybe it’s worth a read. Again…

Get Prepared. Getting my clothing and workout gear ready and out the night before gives me one less excuse to pull out the next morning. I set up my mat in the front room, take out any weights or blocks depending on what I’m doing and lie out my leggings, bra and top so there’s no faffing around in the morning.

Try Something New. I love yoga. It’s the thing I’ve missed the most whilst everything has been a bit up in the air. But in order to spice things up a bit I thought I’d give something new a go. I’d heard a load of good things about Barrecore so signed up for a month’s worth of their online classes and after trying just the one session I have nothing but good things to say. I gave the beginner’s routine a try and it was tough, made me seriously sweaty, but was low-impact so I didn’t have to worry too much about jiggling around and upsetting the neighbours below. The next day was painful – in a good way.

Get a Buddy. My mate Mel and I are really into the idea of exercising together, but our work schedules make that a bit tough so we’re settling for a once-a-week class at the weekend instead. This Saturday we’re going to give some kind of kickboxing thing a go. It sounds hardcore and like a huge stress-reliver – I’m in. I’ll report back with how it goes. We’re planning on giving a few things a try before we settle on attending our favourite on a weekly basis.

Be Nice. And by that I mean be nice to yourself. We are so darn hard on ourselves these days and the way I look at it is that even just one workout session a week is an improvement if you didn’t manage to get one in the week before. Planning a five-day workout attack as your first foray into something sweaty in a while might be a bit tough on the ol’ limbs, so don’t push it too hard. Your body is a temple and all that.
