Weekend Makeup Staples

Weekend Makeup Staples

When it comes to weekends, I am notably low-key in the makeup department. I’ve just got bigger things to ponder over a bold lipstick smudging or liner flaking up all over my face, like ‘Is it socially acceptable to have pancakes twice in one day?’ *cough* yes *cough* or ‘These pyjamas are so comfy, can I just wear them outside?’. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t replied ‘balls’ to the latter question and strode out in my bed wear down to the local shop to get eggs for my pancake feast. So I’ve set the scene; I like things to be fuss-free and requiring a technique that can be aced in seconds. With that in mind I propose just four essential boxes be ticked. Here are my weekend makeup staples:

An ‘I’ve Slept a Shedload’ Moisturiser. Normally I wouldn’t pay so much attention to this step, but for these restful two days I like things to look glowy. No primers or powders, just a slick of a seriously good hydrator with a bit of coverage over the top – but we’ll get onto that in a second. In my eyes there’s one product that really encapsulates that juicy skin look and it’s Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. It’s not something I use on the reg, but there’s always a bottle of it hanging around somewhere for good reason. One thin layer, lightly smoothed on makes you look like you just got a bit heavy handed with your highlighter….in a good way.

An ‘I Woke Up Like ‘Dis’ Dewy Base. Hello tinted moisturisers! There’s just something about their formula that has ‘weekend’ written all over them. There are too many to list here but some of my favourites include the Jouer Matte and Luminizing Moisture Tints, Laura Mercier’s Oil-Free Tinted Moisturiser, Dior’s Nudeskin BB Creme, Dr Jart + Water Fuse BB Cream and many, many more. I find applying them with fingers gets the most natural finish, though I do tend to grab the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge to bump in some extra coverage where required. Concealer depends on how many Orange is the New Black episodes I watched the night before, but if it’s less than two then I just go in a little heavier with the tinted moisturiser on my bags.

A ‘Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed’ Cheat. Now depending on your eye makeup preferences this one is going to differ a little. I never go too heavy, so my weekend lid look is just a parred back version of what I’d rock in the week. I snub the teenie weenie bit of brown liner that I’ve been smudging out along the lash line Monday to Friday, leave it bare, go crazy with the Japonesque Power Curl Lash Curlers and layer on a good coat of mascara – but here’s the important bit – just on the lashes on the outer half of my eye. Sounds a bit weird, but give it a go and I bet you’re impressed. It’s amazing how such a small trick can make things look wider and sorta feline, in a Sunday-friendly way.

An ‘I’m Not Wearing Anything On My Lips’ Lip Colour. What you’re really looking for here is something that can double-up in texture and colour as a wash of colour for the cheeks too. Then we’re really talking. If I’m in more of a nude mood then the AERIN Multicolour Duo for Lip and Cheek gets whipped out and the tawny brown texture gets to work. However, if I fancy something a bit more rosy then you can’t beat the Max Factor Miracle Touch Creamy Blush in Soft Pink. This stuff just looks so good. Vibrant enough to perk things up, but in a non-tacky texture that melts into the skin with a few dabs of a finger.

If I do ever slither out of my weekend uniform then out come the aforementioned of course, but if I do decide on a pancake feast with a pyjama-only dress code then it’s a sans makeup day.

  • I totally agree about not wearing as much makeup on the weekend! I love using a tinted moisturiser on the weekend 🙂 Love this post

  • The beauty flash has been a staple for years.. and the Jouer luminizing is my current crush! I love mixing the Dior BB cream + the Jouer TM and get that perfect glow! 🙂

Sometimes I spend ages doing my makeup on weekends and sometimes I go for minimal like you too. The Nivea Q10 CC cream is my little secret weapon for making me look like i’ve actually had sleep! It’s such a nice dewy base. Mega lusting over that Aerin duo – her products always look so incredible! xx

  • The Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer is still my favorite TM to date! 🙂

  • Sonya

Love the max factor blushes, so easy to apply!!

  • The only unacceptable thing about pancakes at the weekend is not eating them at all!

  • I like to keep my make-up light at the weekend as well……sometimes I don’t bother wearing any until the evening, when I’m usually meeting up with someone..

  • I really want to try the Jouer Matte Tint, wish it was readily available in Australia! And I think it’s more than okay to say to yes to pancakes twice haha

  • I’m the same, it’s sunday today and I’m going to be sat in the office alone, power and mascara it is!

  • Lauren Riordon

  • Annie

I just lapped on the Beauty Flash Balm this morning, it’s great. Concerning lashes: there’s a great video by “Harry makes it up” on youtube on spidery lashes and different ways of making up your lashes. Could you maybe have a look at her videos, they are awesome and deserve some more viewers … Have a great Sunday, Annie

  • I love how you write! On weekends if I don’t have anything to do I just go around the house with my pijamas, read blogs posts and study, always with a cup of tea 🙂

  • similarly to just focusing on outer lashes with mascara, I have a mac half sized eyelash curler and I just curl my outside lashes sometimes which I think looks really nice, and feline as you say! x

  • OITNB is so addicting.i watched the entire show in one weekend.

  • I’ve always wanted to try the laura mercier tinted moisturizer! But the bottle is so big, I don’t know if I want to get that much at once, because I might not like it. Have you ever finished a bottle? How long did it take you? 🙂

  • I love the Clarins beauty flash balm, it’s so good! The Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser has been on my list for quite some time, I think I just need to give in and buy it! xx

  • Such a great post – feeling rather inspired to whip up my own list of weekend essentials. Mine would include sleeping in The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Soak In Moisture Mask, and using a nude/ white eyeliner to brighten up tired eyes. Thanks for sharing and inspiring, always!

Really wanna try the Max factor Miracle touch creamy blush! great faves!

  • I am totally with you on the “mascara on the outer half only” philosophy. It’s almost like putting on a cat eye liner without the liner. Very sexy in the most subtle way. Plus if I’m still sleepy from crazy late Friday nights of partying..ok, of Orange is the New Black, I don’t have to worry about rubbing my eye and ending up with a face full of mascara.

  • Lovely picks, Anna! I’ve wanted to try the Matte Moisture Tint for ages and that Aerin duo looks super pretty 🙂

  • Aerin Duo is on my wishlist!

  • Lucy Moss

    Hi Anna,

I love your posts so much, and agree with you about the Beauty Flash Balm – it’s a game-changer if you had one too many beverages the previous night (not that I ever do, oh no). May I just point out one thing? You say ‘parred back’, but I think you mean ‘pared back’. I’m sorry to criticise, but see link here:

  • BB creams are my usual go-to on the weekends with a bit of blush and an MLBB lipstick.

  • Emily Knott

I really want to try the Jouer tinted moisturisers!

  • PeonyandPeach

I love these paired down simple makeup posts that you do! You should definitely try out the Avon CC cream, it’s sooo lightweight, blends like a dream and has spf 50. I’m currently addicted to it!

  • I love Clarins Beauty Flash Balm! The Jouer moisturiser is next on my list!! xx
