As I sit down to write this post, I realise that after a bit of Googling I’m being a right old tease here because this beaut from Tom Ford isn’t launching until August – but hey, it’s only a week away and this stuff is such a pretty piece of makeup that it’s worth adding to your radar right this minute…
Let’s delve into this gem then. It’s called the Skin Illuminating Powder Duo in Moodlight and as you’ll spot from the pictures it’s a very similar set-up to the Shade & Illuminate Palette, with a a creamy colour on top and a deep golden shade below, but instead of a cream finish, it’s a powder with a whole lot of sheen to give. I’ve got to say that I’m not really the biggest fan of the Shade & Illuminate Palette. Sure, it’s a stunner to look at, but I find the colours a bit too stark on my complexion and the textures a little tacky. With the Skin Illuminating Powder Duo though, it’s a different story. The look and luxe feel of the compact is there, but it’s what’s inside that really shines, quite literally.
If you can’t already tell from having a read around these parts recently, I’m having a real moment with highlighters. It’s something to do with the summer, it just brings out my inner magpie and daily I find myself loading my cheekbones with some kind of glow-giver and right now this is top of my pile. Of course the formula is as you’d expect – creamy, blendable and chunk-free – but it’s its ability to be so subtle which is what I like about it the most. This is one of those products where it’s near impossible to apply too much. It melts with the skin and fuses in such a way that makes you think ‘Did I apply highlighter today?’ and then you catch a glimpse of your structure in the sun and you’re like ‘YAAAASSSSS‘. It might just be the most natural highlighting formula I’ve tried and that’s not a bad thing.
The other thing that’s awesome about this palette is the fact you get two colours in there. If I have days where I’ve been starved of rays then the pale gold that supposedly mimics sunlight is what I reach for, but if I’ve been slapping on the Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanner then I dip into the rosy bronze, which it’s suggested gives off the ‘romantic glow of candlelight’. If I’m having an in-between day then I dip into both and stripe it on. I want to say that the possibilities are endless even though they’re not, but you catch my drift.
