The One Where I Attempt Eyeliner (again)

You know me and eyeliner. We don’t get on. But every now and again I give it another crack to see if my shakey bakey hands have steadied enough to apply a flick with pinpoint precision and am always presented with a wonky, mismatched pair of lined peepers half an hour later. Perhaps it’s because the results always make me laugh? In fact on the above photographed occasion the postman arrived halfway through my little experiment and I had to greet him at the door with one racoon eye and one bare lid. An idea for halloween perhaps? But there are a few products that have landed on my desk that warrant a roadtest and an easy peasy technique that I’ve been giving a go recently that I thought I’d share. Eyeliner – lets do this…

Firstly I’ll touch on the newly discovered technique. It’s simple. All that’s required is a brown matte shadow and a slanted eyeliner brush. I dip the brush in the shadow and swipe lightly on the outer third of my top lashline, then I angle the brush up slightly and press down making a small line joining the outer corner of my eye to the crease. It’s the makeup move I used in my ‘Autumn Style Staples’ video which a few of you picked up on. It’s literally foolproof. You get just a smidge of definition and as it’s put into place with shadow it’s so easy to remove if things go wrong. I tend to blend the flick in a bit so it isn’t so stark and I’m ready to rock. FYI the products pictured above that I use for this are MAC’s Eyeshadow in Espresso and the Zoeva Wing Liner Brush*.

Next lets talk liquid liner. Generally it’s my least favourite form of eyeliner application as I find it to be the most messy, but when the Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen* landed in my grasps I felt it was my duty to give the weighty double-ended scriber a go. Featuring a normal sized nib on one end and teeny tiny calligraphy-style one on the other, TF boast that whatever eyeliner look you desire this duo-brushed pen will do it for you. So I tested their theory using the larger of the two painters for a thick flick and the smaller for a thin everyday-style line and yup it worked. Both ends worked equally well painting on a opaque black pigment without any drag and too much mess. I finished it off with an upper waterline tight-lining with Bobbi Brown’s Smokey Eye Kajal in Black Coffee* – its silky smooth textures glides right on with no transferring to be seen. If you’re in the market for a tight-liner then this may be worth a look-in. The Tom Ford on the other hand as lovely as it is, coming in at a whopping £42 is not something I would propose to be high priority of your wishlist. Lets wait for the dupes to come in…

I’m so hopeless at applying eye liner. It always ends up wonky then when I try and remove it, things get even more messy!

  • philippa

Love the flick! This looks really striking on you. (:

  • Alice Porter

If I am in a hurry I always use a powder and an angle brush as welll, its true, you just can’t go wrong! The flick looks great on you by the way!

  • Mika Avila

Try a gel liner and a fine liner brush! It just takes a bit of practice and it’s much easier than liquid liner.

  • dominica

do you own more zoeva brushes? if yes, what do you think about them? I just got a bunch of these and I’m very happy with my purchase 🙂

  • This REALLY suits you and opens up your eyes.

Eyeliner is something I think is really important. It doesn’t have to be an obvious black line, but a little liner really makes the eyes look wide and bright.

  • Holly Mumford

The flick really suits you, im rubbish at applying eye liner ahha xxoxox

  • Shrutilaya

You need to wear eyeliner ALL the time. 😀

  • Lauren

I’m also very rubbish at applying eyeliner…after numerous attempts (I’m 29 now and still no joy). You’ve done a good job though: x

  • Nena – Whatevergivesjoy

    Looks fine to me! 🙂

  • Suzy

WOW! Looks great! Winged eyeliner is my go to night time look! x

  • Catherine M

Great post! Nice to know I’m not the only one who has a love-hate relationship with eyeliner! x

  • Sylvia

It looks great on you! I recommend Dolly Wink Liquid Liner as it is the best for getting a nice thin line with little to no fuss.

  • Supria

I love the look of eyeliner on other girls, but on me it just does nt work!

  • Maquillage Magic

i can’t do eyeliner either!! My hand ends up being so shaky and then it just doesn’t look nice. I do persist with trying though!! The soap and glory liquid eyeliner is really helpful if you can’t get a thin line, L xxx

  • roshkud

You look stunning with eyeliner! Love ittt

  • Snezhana

nice!!! The eyeliners and all those flicks really suit you – keep on going 🙂 xx Snezhana

  • Ivy

i like angled brush for a liner, be it thick or thin..started off with black eye shadows and then moved onto kohls.. liquid liners are just not my thing

  • On The Dressing Table

oh i want the tom ford liner even more because its so far out of my reach! you look great with liner on, it really suits you 🙂

  • f brown

do not even try it viv! you know you look hot!!

  • Strawbry_Blonde

You look great here Anna. Eyeliner seems to emphasise the shape of your whole face, which looks quite kittenish, in a good way – very pretty!

  • I can’t manage Kohl or liquid liner as I have hooded eyes but I can manage a pretty decent tightlining with a MAC 212 brush and gel eyeliner or black eyeshadow. Have you tried it? It’s a lot easier than liquid eyeliner and is a nice daytime look too.

  • Kat

It looks fab! Another good tip is to place the (slanted) brush against the eye and then ‘slide it’ gently back and forth, then move the brush along and repeat. if you’re using powder it means it doesn’t spread too far or drop on your cheeks.

  • Gavina

You look amazing with eyeliner on! I always use a pen liquid eyeliner as I find I have better control.

  • I love how amazing the “flick” look on everyone (you included) BUT me, I’ll have a go at this and it will look awful! not fair XX

  • maja gudmann

I am with you all the way re the shadow + angled brush technique. I use the MAC no. 266 and their Brun shadow, which is more of a cool-toned dark brown. I find that using a shadow as a liner makes it a lot easier to get away with during the daytime without looking like you’ve tried too hard :-). Terrific post – yet again. X

  • Daniela P

I love the Stila Stay-All Day Waterproof liquid liner…it is holy grail material!!

  • emilylikesmakeup

I have the same relationship with eyeliner as you! I use the Collection felt tip eyeliner as it’s cheap and works well

  • Caityd14

Wow! You should wear eyeliner like this more often! Looks great on you hun xx

  • You look great. I don’t wear eyeliner much either. It always just changes my face so much. Takes getting use to.

  • Kelly C.

you look great! I really like using the darker colors in the naked palette for liner too. I’m a huge fan of gel liner – the tarte one being my favorite. However, I know bobbi brown makes a good one!

  • Stephanie

I would highly suggest you try this- by far the easiest application I’ve found for a cat eye, and I’ve tried them all!

  • Fun Loving Kiminal

Bobby Brown black gel liner and the Mac 211 are my go to cat liner tools, perfect everytime. I like the ease of a liquid liner, but I find that they don’t last as long throughout the day and thelt knib gets a bit smooshed up over time. Whereas a pot of gel and a brush keep well, and for those who have had a pot go dry, 10 seconds in the microwave will do wonders (shhh it’s a beauty secret)

  • Ella

The maybelline gel liner (even if you use it with the included brush!) is my daily staple, it’s so affordable and easy to use. Please do the “Beauty Things I Suck At” tag!

  • alessandralee

Eyeshadow as eyeliner is my go-to as well. I can’t do anything beyond that without looking like an uneven mess. I’ve heard you can make it more dramatic by wetting the brush/shadow before using it, but I’ve never tried it.

  • LauraR

You look great with eyeliner! I think this should become part of your regular routine. Defining the eye just looks so polished. I currently use Smashbox waterproof liquid liner in black or brown because they have a matte finish and they don’t pill off like the MAC or MUFE liquid liners do. Even when I don’t wear liquid eyeliner on my lashline I still use it to tightline because it’s the only thing that actually stays without transferring to my lower waterline.

  • Radhika

You look so lovely with eyeliner! I love the more subtle look eyeshadow liner gives, but when I want a polished look, I go with MAC’s penultimate. It’s pretty easy to use and super black. I also love that it doesn’t flake or wear out at all during the workday. I so want to try the Tom Ford one, but that is definitely a steep price!

  • Such a perfect everyday look! It looks really beautiful on you, nice and fresh faced. I have the same issue trying to re-learn my eyeliner technique during the fall months because I don’t really wear it during the summer. Great post 🙂

  • I sometimes really struggle with eyeliner too, although it looks great and pulls the whole look together, I just can’t be bothered with fuss! When I can muster the strength to use it, I do love Soap and Glory’s Supercat eyeliner – it’s ridiculously easy to apply!

  • Maddy Cane

So pretty, it really suits you! x

  • Hannah Marie

Eyeliner is something I have a love hate relationship. It’s my staple everyday look however I have days where it looks awful because it just goes wrong! It’s something that definitely requires time and practice 😉 xx

  • abi

I’m terrible with eyeliner, I can only do it in a really thick line, so kinda limited on the looks! hah

    abi from a little dust

  • Sybil Mae

I always seem to struggle with eyeliner and I have yet to find one that is easy to apply 🙁

  • Els Van Zegbroeck

Wow, that completely changes your face. I can barely recognize you, how weird. But it may just be that I’m really just not used to it.

  • Valli

You look so beautiful with eye-liner on, my hands are really shaky and I can never do eye-liner without it being too thick, I have to try the new eye-liner pen things, see if they are easier to use xx

  • Daniella

    such a cute post!

  • You look lovely with eyeliner on! x x

  • Merredee X

The struggles of eyeliner…Practice makes perfect. Yours looks lovely!

  • Isabelle McWilliam

My eyeliner issue is I can never get both eyes to bloody match haha!

It can’t be another beauty blog

  • When it comes to eyeliner I am pretty much useless so never bother, I really want to try the slanted brush with eyeshadow technique as you made it look so easy! Such a useful post maybe I’ll finally be able to do a cat eye like I’d love to :p xx Emmi

  • Beautyandtheb

NAILED IT! you look so beautiful!

    B xx

  • Holly Skelton

Look’s lovely. I like to apply pencil eyeliner in a flick and then smudge it out. it gives a less harsh line and disguises my shakey hands!

  • I think it looks great on you 🙂

  • HillaryS

You should try tightlining, it’s like invisible eyeliner but your eyes look more defined, it would like great on you.

  • Libby Cloete
  • Megan Roisin

You look so different with eyeliner on! It’s lovely 🙂

  • AuntyMiff

You work eyeliner so well! But then you’re also gorgeous naturally. Damn you people who have all of the luck!

    Charlotte – x

  • Elizabeth Jacob I know this is super random, but thought this would be up your alley 😛 enjoy!

  • Hilary Walsh

Could be a silly question but have you tried the Eyeko liquid eyeliner? I hated liquid eyeliners til I discovered this little beauty and now I swear by it!!

  • I just recently experimented with flick-y eyeliners too and well, I look better with them, but my shaky bakey hands are making it hard to apply on a daily rush-hour basis. The Tom Ford pen is interesting though! But the price tag.. yowch!

  • PeonyandPeach

I can’t seem to master liquid liner either, I hear practising really helps so I’m going to keep at it!
