The Nail Polish Declutter Where I Was Ruthless For Once

IMG_8979 IMG_8980

As I mentioned in my last video, we are on the move *squeals* so it’s time to get real in Chez VDM when it comes to clearing out. I can’t lie and hide my excitement here because you guys know I’m kinda obsessed when it comes to downsizing. My inner Virgo craves this stuff, so over the past few weeks it’s not been unusual to find me hooking out long-forgotten possessions from under the bed past 10pm and questioning an almost-sleeping Mark whether he wants to keep his sleeping bag back from when he was 12 (the answer was yes, he’s the hoarder and I’m the ‘please can we just put this in a charity bag?’ one). I’ve done pretty well when it comes to editing down my makeup stash and have freed up a fair few MUJI drawers, but my nail polish collection is the one that has seen the greatest reduction, because I was finally ruthless…

I’d always dreamt of having a workspace where there was a little nail polish display on the wall. I could procrastinate by re-arranging the bottles till my heart was content and this was the main reason why I was hanging on to so many. Now it looks like I might not have to work next to my kitchen bin anymore and I’ll finally have a room of my own I’m realising that my dust-collecting rainbow wall of lacquer might not be the most practical use of wall space (boo! #AdultProblems eh?).

So I cleared out my polish stash and gave myself an ultimatum – if I hadn’t worn it in the past 12 months or even thought about wearing it in the past 12 months then it was out. That might seem like quite a lax rule there but let me tell you, there was a lot of surplus going on. Along with some seriously old timers that had seen better days, there were a load of yellows I’d never really worn and peachy colours that just didn’t really suit me that were easy to say goodbye to. Where things got hard though, was when it came to my Essie stash. Man, so many of those have memories! Fancy a walk down memory lane?

Essie Topless & Barefoot is the polish that I wore for my graduation and is great pinky tan nude. Fifth Avenue is a colour that I actually bought in a Walgreens on Fifth Avenue when I was in New York, so I’m never letting that one go. Absolutely Shore is one I purchased ages ago when Essie wasn’t readily available in the UK and despite its crappy texture, it’s still one of my favourite mints. Aperitif is one of my favourite reds, as is After School Boy Blazer is one of my favourite navy’s – actually the only navy I own I think. I could go on, but I think I’ll leave the Essie love-in there for today.

So I’m down to a nail polish collection that occupies just two thirds of a drawer. Fancy a little tour of what’s left sometime?
