The Beauty Bag with Lauren and Mel

Mel and Lauren 1

Mel and Lauren 2

For October’s Beauty Bag offering I’m serving up two for the price of one. You remember Mel and Lauren? My two best mates for many, many years. They’ve dropped in round these parts before to chat all things makeup and while away with them both last month I cornered them for an update on their hot holiday favourites. Get ready for Mel’s one-step skincare secret and fashion finds that are beach and evening appropriate and Lauren’s must-haves, including a book that she didn’t want to put down and had to be surgically removed from each night for dinner…

LAUREN

I loved The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I couldn’t put it down! It took me about five days to read the whole thing and I think everyone would love this. There’s a point at the end where some stuff happens – which I won’t tell you as you promised you’ll read it – that got me a little choked up but I was by the pool and felt a bit silly, so I pulled myself together.

When we’ve been getting back from the pool I’ve been using the Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration After Sun. I’ve never used it before, but there was something about the coconut papaya scent that sold it to me and then I smelt it and to be quite honest I could happily sniff it all day. I would definitely buy it again and it’s nice because it’s a gel so it’s actually quite cooling on the skin. Another thing I’ve been using in the evenings is Moroccan Oil. I use this at home too (I must add this might just be the most used-up bottle I’ve ever seen – Anna), but on holiday I use a lot more than I would normally. Every time I wash my hair I run some through after, but actually while I’ve been here I’ve been using some on the ends too as a pre-shampoo and it’s kept everything nice and soft. For coloured and curly hair – you need this.

Mel’s just stolen my NARS Tinted Moistusier in Groenland. Again this is something I use everyday when I’m at home too. It’s quite sheer, but it’s got enough coverage. It’s one of those things, because if you keep putting foundation on you get in a catch 22, so even if my skin isn’t fantastic I just use this and in the end my skin looks better for it. I do like to bronze over the top of the NARS and for that I use the Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder in Medium. This shade is a bloody nightmare to get hold of – it’s always sold out when I try to buy it! But there’s no glitter in it and it’s not orange at all and it’s been topping up my tan on holiday because I like to keep my face in the shade, so it matches everything up.

MEL

I love the colours of this Primark Kimino. I think it’s always good to have a bright kimono in your suitcase, because you can put it on with any colour of bikini and you look chic straight away. I’ve got a lot of wear out of this and it was a bargain! Plus you can wear it out with actual clothes in the evening – with jeans is my favourite. And don’t even get me started on the Havaianas. They are a godsend. I wear these at all times – the beach, the pool, dinner out – and I love the red ones, you know why? Because everyone has the black, but I think the red ones go with everything too.

I use the Dove Beauty Cream Bar at here and at home – it’s the best. I use it for everything: my face, my persons and it doesn’t dry out my skin at all. It’s especially good for shaving as I find you can get a much closer shave than with shower gel and it gets off SPF really well.

The Eyelure Lengthening No.035 False Lashes are good for holiday as no one really wants to cake on the makeup while they’re away (I must add that Mel is a false lash pro, so doesn’t suffer with the same application anxiety as us mere mortals – Anna). You just want to slap something on your lips, put on some lashes and go. And this way you haven’t got to curl your eyelashes, you haven’t got to try and make them all separate, you just put these on and there you have just the right amount of lengthening definition. So on the lips goes the Dior Lip Glow. This brings out the natural colour of your lips, so it’s not like a lipgloss, it’s not shiny, but it just kind of brings out what you’ve already got. On me it looks more coral, but on Lauren it looks more pink. It just gives a bit of sumthin’ sumthin’.
