The Attack of the Eyeshadow Sticks

It is slowly dawning on me that I may have a bit of a problem when it comes to pencil housed, roll-up eyeshadow products. My stash of them seems to grow on a weekly basis, and the little dish where like to sit no longer holds half of my collection. Houston, we have a problem. If you missed the pencil revolution of the past few years that was kicked off by a certain chubby stick, then let me fill you in. It started with the lips, then gravitated to eyes with all the beauty big-guns beginning to offer up their cream formulations in handy pencil-type presentations. Now I’m not the biggest eyeshadow gal out there, but there’s something about scribbling all over the lid with one of these then blending them out with your finger that just appeals to my lazy makeup side and it’s easy peasy. Without even realising they are the only type of eye colour that I like to slick on at the moment. So here’s a handful, oh and they’re all neutral of course

Collection Work The Colour Eyeshadow Pencil in Hot Chocolate – £3.19 – from Superdrug. The colour of this one is a good’un – a purple rooted taupe that sits nicely when blended just on the outer corner of the top and bottom lashlines, but unfortunately it’s not a long haul option. A bit of primer helps to eek it out, but one for oily lidded gals to steer clear from.

Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes in Fuller Fudge* – £17 – from Debenhams. There’s a tussle at the top of my cream stick charts between this one and the By Terry. Shade-wise it’s love; the rusty tones look awesome on pretty much everyone. But the big clumsy nib loses it points. I’m tempted to claw it out and depot for easier finger smudging application.

Jouer Creme Eyeshadow Crayon in Baroque – £19 – from Cult Beauty. Well isn’t this a beaut? A neutral chocolate brown with just the right balance of shimmer, I threw this on pre-evening event last week with not much else and was impressed by its ability to beef up a pretty ‘nothing’ makeup for a fancy occassion. And it stays in place. Bonus.

KIKO Long-Lasting Stick Eyeshadow in 7 – £6.90 – KIKO. Hello inner corner highlight. I find this beige-based gold a little too much all over the lid and this stuff seriously brings the sparkle. But paired up with one of my more brown eye tint offerings it works it. Under a tenner, plus it lives up to it’s eight hour claims – I sense more KIKO purchases on the horizon.

By Terry Ombre Blackstar Colour Fix Shadow in Misty Rock – £27.50 – from Space NK. Oh By Terry how I love thee. Opaque, but blendable colour in a formula that does not budge. Like, ever. My only complaint the shades do run a little heavy on the shimmer side of things, but if you can handle the glimmer, scribe away.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Shadow Stick in Bad Bronze – £4.49 – from Boots. The best budget option out there in on my eyes (get it?). A rich reddish brown that adds a bit of something something to a simple look and it’s a longwearer. Smudged into the lashline and blended up and out – perfect.

I can see the title for a revisited post in a few months time already – 50 shades of neutral shadow pencil.

I’ve never tried an eyeshadow stick but the jouer stick looks the best to me!

UK beauty blog sale including nars, MAC, armani, clinique and more.

  • I love the look of These, but they alaways break with me. Maybe I´m ust clumsy. 😀
I will however try the KIKO Version. Thanks Vivianna for gettting me hooked once again…:D

    Claire | Shining Like Silver

  • Anna Blush

The By Terry option looks and sounds so nice, shame it’s so pricey! Think I’ll have to stick to Rimmel x

  • and kate

I would never have thought of using pencil eyeshadows but now I desperately want to give this a go!

  • Shevasherapy

This is a good alternative to my cream eyeshadows (and by that I mean the maybelline color tattoos haha). I love easy peasy eyeshadows too.

  • Anya Cross

I think the tunnel ones a winner for me, cheap and a lovely colour.

  • Evie

I have the Collection eyeshadow stick in the pinkier shade which I really like for highlighting however I would not use it all over the eye. I am definitely considering picking up the Kiko one as my friend, Sofia has it (our blog here: and loves it!

  • Maddy Cane

The By Terry one looks gorgeous, I really want to try it! x

  • though the packaging of the by terry one is beautiful, it’s too expensive in our opinion! Rimmel scandaleyes are really good 😀 also, really wanna try the brand – kiko, heard so much about it!

  • Alissia

The jouer one and the by terry one look beautiful! x

  • gemma alexander

I love eyeshadow sticks. I always keep one in my handbag just incase I have last minute plans! You have such a gorgeous collection, I have heard so much about KIKO recently I shall definitely have to try them out!

    Gem. x

  • Sarah Kay

Thanks for this post! I recently got one by Make Up For Ever and was disappointed that it’s not a roll-up (and a VERY weird size to find a sharpener for) and also the shadow was tapered oddly and very hard to apply seamlessly. Glad I now have some other options 🙂

  • Sej

All of these shades look gorgeous. It is fun to scribble away somewhat recklessly. I’ve never tried Kiko makeup but I’d be keen to test their eye products if this has worked favourably for you. Their nail polishes are super!

Interesting that you say that about the collection one, I put it on my hand and literally couldn’t get it to come off!

The rimmel ones look so nice.

    • Nickis Nick Nackery

Haha me too! That was one swatching session I regreted for the rest of the day lol x

  • Bella

You’ve left out 3 of the best, in order of goodness Laura Mercier (perfection), Bobbi Brown (all matte colours, but lovely and long lasting) and Chanel (a bit shhimmery, but some unusual colours). I’m keen to try the By terry!

  • Amy

I’m excited about Collection’s new eyeshadow pencils! They’re so affordable too 🙂

  • roshkud

I want to try them all! The by terry is so beautiful

  • Celina

Even though it doesn’t sound like the easiest to work with, I want to try the Clinique Chubby Sticks for Eyes. I feel like it might be something that would be nice to use with a fluffy brush to give a quick wash of colour over the lids.

Eye shadow sticks seem interesting… I’m definitely going to try them! Thanks! A blog on how to be the best at everything on beauty, singing, fashion, dancing, and other talents!

  • Emily Allen

Wanting all of these beauties now 🙂 Just seems so much easier to have creme eye shadows in this form saves getting your fingers messy xx Emmi

  • I have mega oily lids, so have stayed away from these. That said I love the color tattoo’s so maybe with a good primer and the right one – By Terry I am thinking, I will be alright.

Thank you for another great post

  • Bree

Ah wow, that’s a nice collection. I really love the look of the Jouer one 🙂

    Colour Shimmer Sparkle

  • Bev

Love, love By Terry but Misty Rock has been out of stock for so long 🙁 looking forward to the new autumn shades after being told by the By Terry MU artist the brown one is lovely. Tempted even if it is darker than I normally use. I keep trying to get Misty Rock

  • Lauren B

I love browns/neutral eyeshadow, I have never tried any of these but they look amazing :)!

  • Sarah

The ones by Laura Mercier are really nice too! Especially for a easy go-to smokey eye with a matte brown eyeshadow in the crease (:

  • Coco

I’m still not comfortable using these sticks. I prefere the good ole palette 🙂 I’ve just come across your blog and I’m your newest follower via Bloglovin, and facebook (private id valeria a).

The By Terry ones are beautiful but almost £30 for one seems a bit much. I found the Collection ones really long-lasting on me. You could probably buy the full shade range for the cost of one By Terry lol. Great post, I must try the Rimmel Scandaleyes!

  • Sarah

The Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow stick ones are also amazing. Stick to your eyelid all day without the need for a primer. Happy days!

  • Danielle

I do quite like shadow sticks. I used to wear Rimmel’s Bulletproof Beige everyday, but now that phase has passed. I am a bit disappointed with the ones from Urban Decay because they are too creamy that they break easy.

  • Henna Rios

The By Terry and Rimmel ones look amazing. I don’t think my budget will stretch as far as £27 though so will have to stick to Rimmel. Does anyone know if any of there other colours are good?

    • Renata

Bluffing is gorgeous. Have you bought any so far?

  • Lets Talk Beauty

Oh gosh all those colours are my kind of shadows. I am obsessed with neutral colours esp bronze. The Kiko one sounds fab and what a great price too. I love the Rimmel ones & have a few in my collection I wear them quite alot

  • I am loving shadow sticks these days and that jouer one looks like its right up my alley

  • Martyna

Rimmel Scandaleyes looks amazing, such a lovely colour xx

    Martyna | NEON MIZZLE

  • Kate

I looove my laura mercier eye shadow stick, but its verry expensive going to try kiko

  • Claudia

They all look gorgeous, love the look of the Jouer one.

  • Renata

I want to try the Rimmel and Kiko sticks. By Terry is a bit too glittery for me, which is a shame, as I love the colours they have. X

  • I am obsessed with the By Terry Ombre Black Star sticks – I have them in Brown Perfect and Midnight Forest. Totally worth the splurge.
