New-In Haircare: The Good & The Bad

IMG_2105 IMG_2110

I’m finally out of my hair funk. I had a bad haircut before Christmas that was way shorter than I’d envisaged in my head and my usually abundant hair that normally grows about an inch before I’ve even walked out of the hairdressers has been uncharacteristically stubborn about making a new appearance at the root this time. That has meant a fair few months doing the heart-eye emoji at every long haired lass that’s walked past me in the street and throwing mine up into a little stub of a bun in protest. Now it’s not where I want it to be – yes, I think my short lob days are behind me (for now) – but I’m the happiest with my mop that I have been a while and I think it’s all to do with a change of parting.

A commentator on YouTube suggested that I give a middle part a go, so one day after washing it I grabbled with my parting and managed to split it roundabout the middle (sidenote: a middle part can never truly be dead centre, at least on my wonky face). It took a lot of work due to years of it being coaxed into a sweeping side number, but I actually quite liked the end result. I sort of looked like my evil twin, in a good way (I hope). To pair with this hair revelation I’ve also been testing out a round of new products; some fresh launches and some just new to me. Here’s a little round-up of the good and the not so fab…

Redken Beach Envy Volume Texturising Shampoo & Conditioner. If something has the words ‘volume’ and ‘texture’ in the title then it’s a pretty safe bet that I’m going to like it. Now this shampoo and conditioner duo isn’t going to win any awards in the ‘soft and shiny’ category, but it does leave your hair feeling clarified and clean and with a small amount of grit to it that just translates to some extra oomph.

Oribe The Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo. You guys know I love this already as I mentioned it in my last favourites video, but aside from the Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo, which is my favourite clarifying shampoo ever, this one comes in a close second. I do find it to be more gentle so it’s a good’un for those with coloured hair.

Bumble & Bumble Foam Spray Blow Dry. I can’t say that I’m the biggest fan of mousse textures in my hair, so although I appreciate the beachy, piece-y texture that this gives it does leave my strands feeling slightly claggy and that’s just something that I struggle to get behind. I would however use this on holiday to eke out a bit of wave to my hair as it does tease out the texture extremely well.

Elizabeth & James Nirvana White Dry Shampoo. Smells great, but leaves your hair with a blue-rinse vibe to it. I’d seen many reviews warning about this, so it’s no big shocker and whilst it does make your locks smell kind of incredible, it also takes so much rubbing in that the act of getting rid of the grey makes your hair greasier than it was in the first place. I’m glad I picked up a miniature of this.

Kiehl’s Scalp Purifying Pyrithione Zinc Dandruff Shampoo. I love this stuff. It feels so cooling when I throw it on in the shower and as someone who deals with an irritated scalp from time to time, that is just a glorious feeling. I haven’t been using it long enough to critique how it deals with my dandruff patches, but short-term it’s worked well as an every-other-day shampoo and I haven’t felt the need to do another shampoo afterwards. Thumbs up.
