My Top 5 2014 Beauty Discoveries

Tomorrow I’ll be bringing you my 2014 Makeup Favourites. It’s long, it’s beefy, it’s wordy and probably a little overwhelming so I thought today I would show you like the ‘best of, of the best of’. Oh dear, just writing that down makes me realise how ridiculous that sounds, but you know what I mean. If I had to pick just five things that I’ve discovered this year that really rock my boat, then they would be the following…

Fairydrops Scandal Queen Mascara. I picked this up on a whim from a BEAUTYMart concession in my local Topshop a few months back now. Just because I remembered some of the US beauty gals I watch talking about the brand and well – I’m glad I did make that impulse buy because this is the best mascara ever. L’oreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara has been replaced and the more this dries out the more I love it (gross, but true). Big lashes, long lashes, separated lashes, curled lashes – it does it all.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Liquid Lipsticks. In terms of lipstick launches that have arrived in 2014 this is the top dog for me. These are, hands down, the best liquid lipsticks I’ve ever tried. Smooth and opaque in one coat these create a matte stain on the lips that you will genuinely have to scrub off at the end of the day. The only downside is that they do differ formula-wise from colour to colour. I love Pink Pong, Olé Flamingo (my favourite – a more wearable bright pink) and Hot Pepper, but Grand Cru is terrible. Definitely worth a swatch to test the consistency before you buy.

Soap & Glory Solar Powder. Lily had been banging on about this for yonks and after realising that without my weekly doses of fake tan my usual favourite NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna was looking a bit full-on, I too invested. Since it was purchased mid-year it’s practically all I’ve used bronzer wise. I haven’t used Laguna since. Featuring a split compact with a light peachy bronzer on one side and a darker more brown one of the other you can amp up or down your sun-kissed colour depending on where you swirl your brush making it a good option for us paler skinned gals.

LORAC Pro Palette. I really could quite happily dish out all my other palettes to friends and family, hold this one back and be one happy lady. Ever since I received it (thanks to Sandra!) back in the summer I’ve used it at least a few times a week since. The mix of mattes and shimmers means it covers most looks and bar the usual bronzes, taupes and golds there’s some colours in there too – a purple, a silver, a reddy copper – that I find I can actually incorporate in without it looking too much. Oh and the formula, the packaging, the texture….the list is endless.

Clarins Instant Concealer in 01. This is the newest addition to this line up, but ever since I discovered this in October (I think), it’s been taken everywhere with me and is something I squeeze out for not only concealer duties but also for foundation on days when I want to have a light coverage day. The finish is creamy, but pigmented – don’t be fooled – this can stuff cover, it just does so in the most natural, skin-like way.

You may wish to mentally prepare yourself for tomorrow’s video. Save it till you have a bath, hang up your washing, make dinner while it’s in the background. Heck – you could probably do all three…

  • I have been wantingto try the bourjois lipstick for a long time and that clarings concealer sounds like a winner!

  • This bronzer sounds amazing. I just recently really discovered bronzer for myself and have by now about 5 since i always found new ones which were even better then the last one. The best one so far was the Hoola bronzer by benefit. But this one sounds amazing too. I see my sixed bronzer coming on 😛

  • Emma F

I love the Bourjois velvet touch lipsticks – so long lasting. Agree that some seem to have a poorer formula than others. x

    Jodie // La Lune Song

  • Caroline

That’s funny, I much prefer Grand Cru over Hot Pepper, I find it much easier to get the opaque effect with fewer coats. Hot Pepper looks a little transparent on me unless I do a thousand coats and then it gets flakey. Great favourites!

  • Amalie

The Lorac Pro palette is a must-have xx.

  • I love reading your posts. I now definitely want to try the Clarins concealer.

    XX Sarah

    YUS fashion

  • The Lorac Pro Palette has been one of my favorites this year, too! And you’ve definitely made me want to try the Clarins concealer – I was at a Clarins counter yesterday actually and was so tempted, but I told myself to wait until my beloved Nars one runs out!

  • Jeanette Q

I definitely would like to try that mascara. I’m waiting on delivery for Tarte Lights Camera Lashes, but this one sounds wonderful.

  • I’ve heard so many things about the palette as well as the Bourjois lipsticks! The palette is so hard to find in Canada since Sephora doesn’t carry Lorac!

  • Yes to the Fairydrops Mascara! I have it and it is /the/ best mascara I’ve used!

  • Hollie Miles

I purchased a Bourjois liquid lipstick recently and have been using it non-stop – such great formula! Looking forward to the best of 2014 products!

  • I’ve heard a gazillion and one good things about the LORAC Pro Palette. I need it in my life 🙁 X

  • Jodie Wright

I feel like no one has given an honest review of the Lorac palette. Probably because everyone really wants to love it. The shadows go on lovely but they fade so quickly and all that pigmentation just disappears. I haven’t tried them with a primer yet but none of my other shadows need a primer so I don’t see why this palette should.

  • I completely understand what you mean about Grand Cru’s consistency, however I’ve been able to make it work by blending it in with my finger or a brush. It’s not as convenient, but it’s SUCH a beautiful colour once you blend it in (one of my favourite reds!)
    xx Maria

  • With the exception of the liquid lipstick (and they’ve only been released within the last month or so) nothing on your list is available in Canada! Ugh, the pains of being an international beauty lover.

  • These are some killer picks, Anna! The Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets made it to my list too! xo

  • Chic Girl

Awesome list. I love the Bourjois rouge edition velvets

  • Talisa Lauren Tossell

    That mascara is gorgeous!

  • I’m in love with the Bourjois liquid lipsticks, they last so well! x

  • niniel555 .

I am loving Bourgois velvet lipstick too. 🙂

  • All these products sound great, that palette looks and sounds amazing! Those Bourjois lipsticks sound great, it’s been a great year for drugstore makeup. x

  • ayme nicole

Oooh I’ve always wanted to try the Lorac one. Weird, I thought it was on Sephora but a quick check on their website tells me no.

  • Stacy
  • Such great finds during 2014! The Lorac Pro Pallet was hands down my favorite find of the year!

  • The LORAC Palette was totally up there in my top 5 as well, can’t believe I lasted so long without it!

    Cass | CassandraMyee

  • Maira

i bought grand cru on an impulse and somehow it applied SO much better than it did in your video- so cray! I ate with it, I even fell asleep with it and it was somehow still on nice and even, with a bit of fading on the inside, which is to be expected considering i had garlic bread..

  • Jennifer

Can’t wait to try the Clarins concealer!
