My Most Used Fitness Apps

IMG_9986

Mobiles are handy old things, aren’t they? From procrastination devices to a little hunk of metal and plastic that weirdly connects you with the whole world I’m barely spotted without mine clutched in my right hand. Though this is mainly due to the fact that I’m terrified of losing it and have a ‘WHERE IS MY PHONE?‘ melt-down at least twice a day when actually I’m holding it up to my face and I’m on a call. Doh! Aside from scrawling blog posts in the Notes App, one of my other most-used functions on it is as an exercise aid. In fact the folder titled ‘Fitness’ on my homepage is positively brimming with must-have apps that I’m always egging my friends on to download. So today I thought I’d egg on you…

Nike Running – download here. When I used to run on the reg I used this app every single damn time I left the house for a session of pounding the pavements. It tracks your run and gives you data on your average pace, calories burnt, whether you were faster or slower than your last run, all whilst giving you encouragement when you hit personal bests and milestones. It’s like having a personal trainer with you and it gives you a good visual on your progress. Plus – it’s free. In fact it looks like this app might be dusted off and used again soon as my family are trying to get me to sign up to a running assault course thing with them and it does sound kinda fun…

Nike+ Training Club – download here. This is a great little app which creates tailored workouts for three different targets; getting lean, toned or strong. You pick your program, select what level you’d like it to be and it delivers you a daily workout how-to. There’s even some sessions with celebs and sporting superstars on there; doing weights with Karlie Kloss is certainly a motivator. Again it’s free and I like this one best for when I’m travelling because all you need is your phone and a pair of trainers for most of the routines on there.

MyFitnessPal – download here. This is the all-encompassing fitness app, from calorie-tracking (I can’t say I’m too into that aspect of it) to workout logging and with a little fit-fam community in there too. I’d say this is more geared to those who want to keep a real eye on all things fitness, but already have their exercise routine down. I like it most for keeping track of my goals and for working out the nutritional value of foods when I’m eating out (though most times I think ‘Stuff it‘ and tuck in anyway – life is too short!).

Cody – download here. Cody is a bit like the NTC app in that it provides you with month-long training plans, however you do have to pay for them (though they do provide you with a free sample playlist when you join). You find the trainers that you like, pay for a plan (about £20 each I think) and then you can download the videos onto your phone so you can play them whenever you want and without an internet connection. I started to give the Ashley Galvin BodyStrong plan a go, but it was intense and way above what my fitness level is right now, so I’ve banked it for another time when I don’t resemble a puffed out walrus after five minutes of following it along.

In the wellbeing realm of things there’s a new guided meditation app that I’ve been giving a go and getting seriously relaxed to recently that’s well worth a browse of, but I’ll save that for another day. Until then; ready, steady, download….
