My Go-To Smokey, But Everyday Eye

Now of course when I say smokey, I mean on the ‘no makeup, makeup – is she even wearing eyeshadow?‘ end of the spectrum. You know me. If you want to see how to really whip up a dramatic, perfectly executed winged-out lid look then I’d point you in the direction of NikkieTutorials who is just a makeup QUEEN. Though I like to intensify things eye-wise for more of an evening look, day to day I like to keep things parred back in the eyeshadow department and recently I’ve shifted from preferring shimmers to matte formulas. There’s something about a matte eye that’s kinda ’90’s and eternally chic. Sorta sexy, sorta understated, extremely wearable – whatever the occasion.

Most palettes have a handful of matte shades swimming amongst more sparkly colours, but the Viseart Eyeshadow Palette in Neutral Matte bucks that trend and is a glimmer-free zone, which is why right now in the midst of my matte obsession it’s basically the only palette that I’m reaching for. Sure, it’s pricey – like real pricey – but ever since I took the purchase plunge I haven’t touched any other matte textures. In fact I had a recent cull of my eyeshadow palettes and singles because this product contained so many superior dupes. The texture is creamy and buttery and not patchy at all, like some other mattes can be. I still use a primer, like I do with any ol’ eyeshadows, but the longevity is there and the tones offered are on point.

My favourite way to don this palette is to take a mixture of the first and second colours on the top row and dust them into my crease with a MAC 217 Brush to pre-empt blending later on in the process. Then with the same brush I go in to the furthest right colours from the second and third rows, give ’em a little mix and throw that on all over the crease. I’d say that the right colour on the second row is actually my favourite colour from the whole palette. It might just seem like a not-very-exciting brown colour, but it’s almost like a contour shade for your eyelids. Once that’s all blended in with the combo I applied as the first step, I take a pencil brush – in this case the ZOEVA 230 Pencil Brush – and dab it into the furthest left colour from the second row and take it along my top lashline and flicked out a bit. It helps to define things a little bit more and means that I don’t have to use eyeliner. LAZY GAL SCORE.

Two minutes. Two brushes. An everyday smokey eye? DONE.
