Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to Twitter I try and respond to every single tweet I receive – though I’ve been a little lax in recent days due to a mini holiday, shhhhh – it’s just the easiest place to strike up conversation with you lot and keep on top of what I’ve replied to and all that jazz. So if you’re ever in the mood to have a chat then head over there. Over recent weeks I’ve been keeping a mental tally of reoccurring questions that crop up often and thought I’d collate them into one handy FAQ style post. Maybe you were pondering the to be mentioned, or maybe not – either way here are the answers…

Q. I’m going to the US – what beauty buys should I pick up?

A. Have no fear because I have a shopping list featuring all my favourites and suggestions here. It’s an old post, but not much has changed in the past year or so, though I did add on a few bits in this post if you want the latest version. But in terms of general brands that I recommend having a dig around their counters I’d suggest Tarte, Make Up For Ever, Josie Maran, FreshWet and Wild and even Revlon and L’Oreal as the range available overseas is seriously huge.

Q. I’m coming to the UK – what beauty buys should I pick up?

A. I listed my top five must-buys here, but I do also remember mentioning a few items in one of mine and Lily Pebbles’ first Beauty Chat videos too. I’ll see if I can firm the answer to this question up into a post v.soon as there are many, many other items that I’d suggest raiding our drugstores for.

Q. What shade are you in ‘insert product name here’ foundation?

A. Now this is one I get asked a lot. Let me just have a quick raid around my foundation section…OK, so I’m roughly a B10/B20 in CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation, a 4 or 6 in Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, 125 in Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (though it is definitely for my more tanned moments), Deauville in NARS Sheer Glow, 100 in Dior Airflash, B20 in YSL Teint Touche Eclat and somewhere in between N1 and N2 in L’Oreal True Match. Though I haven’t worn a MAC foundation in yonks, back in the day when I did I was around an NW20. And for all the aforementioned where I mention two shades, the lighter of the two matches me in my natural state and the darker when I’ve been reaching for the faux tanner.

Q. What’s your favourite tinted moisturiser/foundation?

A. This is such a toughie. Tinted moisturiser-wise I do love the Jouer Luminizing and Matte Moisture Tints – though I did do a post on my top picks with reasonings for each here. And for foundation it’s really a tussle between three: the CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua for everyday, the NARS Sheer Glow for daily use when I need a bit more coverage and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk for filming and evenings out. And for reference I have pretty normal-ish skin with a bit of dryness round my eyes and nose and a lil’ greasiness on the chin.

Q. I want to start a blog – any advice?

A. Funny you should ask because Lily Pebbles and I churned out a 6-part series Guide to Blogging and Vlogging. I’ll pop a link to the playlist here, but it should answer any questions or concerns a blogging beginner might have. We’re actually thinking of posting up a follow-up soon, so any questions you’d want answered in that do feel free to share ’em below. Good luck!

Q. I’m coming to London – recommendations?

A. Yes! Plenty. All my favourite places to eat, shop and what to buy are linked-up here and if you end up at my ‘Top Beauty Landmarks’ post – a.k.a) all the best places to get your spend on – you’ll even find a map. But if you ever find yourself in town and stuck for what to do then feel free to drop me a tweet, or though I may just point you in the direction of Lily – she’s good with that kinda stuff, she’s like my personal London tour guide.

Q. Skincare or makeup?

A. Easily one of the most hard-hitting questions I’ve ever been asked. And no matter how much time I spent processing this one I’m not sure I’d ever reach a conclusion. It’s impossible I’m afraid…

This is a great idea for a post, as most would do it as a video. As many have already said, I love that you used lipsticks to spell out ‘FAQ’. Though now I want to know what all of them are… LIPSTICK COLLECTION PLEASE!!

  • Mel

The photo is really cool. The last question is a toughie! I’d probably go for skincare but would forever hide my make up less face in public.

  • Janine Maral

    Enjoyed reading this FAQ post!

  • Jennie

How about the FAQ of why you don’t disclose which products you are given or are paid to feature. or the FAQ of why do you never answer in the comments any more like you used to.

    • Amyzz

    • Lydia

There is a disclaimer here which Anna links in the description box of all her videos. Not sure about the comments thing though!

    • Ella

Well maybe she doesn’t want to face the comment section as there is people like you who aren’t exactly pleasant.

      • victoria62

See the oh her reply Ella

    • victoria62

There may well be a disclaimer, but on each individual product Anna does not astrix or similar which she was gifted/given/paid to write about. It’s clear some of these things are given to her but it would help to know which. There was a palette post a couple of weeks ago she just delete comments asking about disclosure, not right in my opinion. There was a £65+ palette with blue in, that all fans of Anna would know she probably wouldn’t buy, as she prefers neutrals.

      • victoria62

It does make a difference to me if I know a blogger paid for a product themself. If you were given an expensive palette you weren’t too keen on, you’d think it was just ok, but if you’d spent over £65 on it and it was just meh, you’d be disappointed. Ella, if Anna wasn’t interested at all in her readers or the comments and questions they ask she should remove the comments section. I’m not sure I’ve seen her answer any comments for about 2 years. Pretty rude if you ask me, as it’s the readers here clicking affiliate links, adverts etc that pay her wages. It wouldn’t kill her to answer some questions. I was a long time follower/subscriber, I have now unfollowed due to her disregard for her subscribers, including treating the blog as more of a magazine without providing some substance to the mostly press release posts she does. £300 plus skincare routines are beyond me I’m afraid.

        • Ella

As she has said, she is more likely to reply on Twitter. Every time I have tweeted her she has replied and favourited.

        • I agree that it is important to know whether a post is sponsored or not, especially when the blogger is very influential and you are buying something simply because they are saying it is worth it.

But as for commenting, I don’t think that she should remove the comment section just because she doesn’t reply to them herself as many other girls read them and are able to help each other out through them. And as she said, she is (usually) very active on twitter – I can imagine it would be really hard for her to constantly create new content as well as stay on top of all of the comments from her lovely readers. She has to pick her battles!

Oh Anna you are just WONDERFUL and I absolutely love reading your blog!

Thank you so much for working so hard to constantly give us great content to read/watch, your hard work does not go unnoticed!

  • Carolyn Wolfram

I agree with checking out Tarte while you are here in the US. It is quickly becoming one of my new favorite brands! 🙂

  • the last one is interesting! I feel they go hand in hand, my makeup looks like crap if the area underneath is arid or patchy or in general not healthy and lush..and skincare alone won’t get me far because of the damage I have done during the is deft. needed to keep me looking sane and human 😀

  • Pamela

Talking about L’Oreal, if someone is interested in or, you’re just sightseeing Madrid-Spain, the brand has opened a store with all their products (Calle (Street) Fuencarral 59). I will link you to the their web page just in case you are interested in:

  • Very informative Anna 🙂 love Q&A’s xx

  • Last question- it’ll always be skincare for me! Start with a good base, and you’ll be grateful in the long-run :3

  • great post!

  • BigPrimpinBeauty

Great post and I absolutely love the lipstick art! :o)

  • Pamela Emily

    Great post ! 🙂

  • As much as I adore make up, I’d have to say skin care.

I love your blog. Will watch yours and Lily’s YouTube vid now. 🙂

  • I’m definitely a skincare gal. I feel that if you focus more on your skin, there’s no need to spurge or take loads of time on makeup.

Do you have any recommendations for building/creating a site for your beauty blog, I think both you and Lily mentioned you had old college friends help you, but I’m pretty sure none of my friends would be able to do it!

  • Jo Fisher

I love these posts – and I’d love to read more if you get asked anything else! I’m such a novice with makeup so beginners guides would be the best 🙂
