A Good’un of a Base from Benefit

Me and Benefit bases go way back. Their Playstick concealer/foundation/powder combo product was one of the first ever high complexion cover-ups I purchased. Despite my youthful glow that somehow remained pretty blemish-free through my teenage years – my general hairy-ness and monobrowed appearance made up for that – I used to seriously paint this stuff on heavy. Real heavy. Just one of my many pre-twenties beauty faux pas. But since then, though I’ve dabbled in the odd Benefit evener-upper I haven’t come across anything that wowed like that did back in the day (I actually think I went through about three of them – told you I caked it on). That was until I road tested their newest launch which is due to hit counters in April – though it’s online now – the Big Easy Multi-Balancing Complexion Perfector.

Circus-style marketing bumf aside the long and short of it is that Benefit are bringing to market a light to medium coverage base that has a liquid to powder finish so you can expect things to be pretty matte, long-lasting and shine-free. Matte isn’t usually my thing, but we all have greasy days from time to time and when things are starting to look a bit fry-up like on my chops this is what I’ve begun to reach for. It’s so similar to the Jouer Matte Moisture Tint, I can’t even begin to note to the differences; there just aren’t any. It lets a peek of shine through to keep it looking natural, but offers up an everyday appropriate formula that means you can skip the powder. The only difference is that with the Benefit option you can colour-match yourself in store to one of the six shades (I’m Light). It’s not too shabby at staying put either. My face eats up foundation for breakfast, lunch and dinner – but persists through to still be seen six to eight hours or so later.

The only warning I would issue for this is that über dry complexioned gals or guys may wish to pass up this one as with anything mattifying it can have the tendency to cling onto flakey patches for dear life. That’s just the nature of the oil-zapping beast. But if you’ve always eyed up the Jouer but umm-ed and ahh-ed about your colour match – here’s the solution. Finally.
