The One Where I ‘Shop My Stash’

IMG_1060 IMG_1061

Shop the stash‘ was a term I first heard Laura use way, way back in the day. Remember the days when we all wanted to get our hands on as many MAC MSF’s as we could and had to import Essie colours over from the U.S via eBay? The term applies to all beauty lovers that own enough makeup to stock their own version of Space NK and therefore have products that gather dust. ‘Shopping the stash’ is when you peruse your own shelves, fill up your basket and get to checkout without paying. Lovely. It’s always appealed to me because it’s a way to use things up, rediscover old things that you used to adore and a method that invigorates my love for all things cosmetics every time I do. It also satisfies that itch to go shopping and try something new without actually having to spend a penny. So this weekend I’ve had another beauty clear-out, but instead of boring you with my findings on that for the 136th time this year I thought I’d show what oldies I’m bringing back into my makeup bag instead…

When it comes to primers, you won’t find any mattifying formulas in my stash. Oh no! It’s all about glow over here and possibly the glowiest of them all is Dior’s Glow Maximizer Light Boosting Primer. I’ve been desperate to get my hands on the BECCA Backlight Priming Filter (and possibly may have by the time this post goes live!), but I’ve been trying to make do with what I have and the formula of the Dior seems pretty similar. It imparts a soft, pearly sheen on the skin which doesn’t translate to shimmer but more full-on sheen. It’s heavy duty stuff this and with the winter turning my skin a not-so-flattering shade of grey, it’s come to the rescue at the right time. Speaking of glow another item that’s made a reappearance is the Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Powder in Candlelight. Now considering I use The Sculpting Powder all the time, this highlight barely has a dent in it, but I’m not sure why because it’s a really flattering shade. Not too shimmery, nor subtle; it’s a good everyday cheek booster because it’s not blindingly obvious you’re even wearing anything there.

With all this chatter around the new Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation, I’ve been inspired to fish out my bottle of the original HD Foundation (I forgot to picture this – my bad!). I use N120 and it’s a pretty OK match for my un-faux-glowed complexion right now. I actually really like this formula, especially for evenings out or occasions when I’m filming and sheer finishes just ain’t cutting it. It’s pretty satin in the way it sits, so isn’t particularly dewy or matte – it’s just skin.

In terms of colour I feel like I always dust this one off whenever I have a ‘shopping my stash’ episode – NARS’ Eyeshadow in Ondine. I feel like this colour would look incredible on everyone because it’s a twist on your usual taupe in that there’s a decent whack of purple in there, but it’s nothing to be scared of. As with all and any eyeshadows, I like it worn on its own, blended out and paired with a shedload of mascara. Then for lips I remembered this old chestnut – MAC Lip Pencil in Beet. Do you remember this one too? I think it was last year or the year before that I was obsessed with this colour and wore it all winter long just smooshed all over my lips. It’s like a rosy pink with a bit of plum. Not necessarily my usual type of colour that I gravitate towards, but I love the matte finish and it’s something a bit different. So – in the makeup bag it goes…
