En Route Beauty

When it comes to trains, I’m well travelled. My commuting days stood me in good stead and I can still recite the timetable home home from London, along with never needing to peek at a map. It’s all up here. But one thing I never really mastered on my daily journeys was gauging the right levels of beauty bumf to bring along; too much and I began to resemble a cosmetics camel, too little and I sat there (if I was lucky enough to get a seat) looking a little sad and grey like the sandwiches that pass by on the buffet cart. But after some contemplation and a return home last weekend by rail to test my theory I think I’ve got the balance just right, so here’s my en route edit for beauty movers and shakers:

COMO Shambhala Invigorate Balm: I’ve oded my love to this before, but a roller of the stuff just makes you recline back and have an ‘aaaaah’ moment which is often needed in  sardine-like carriage filled times. With Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Lavender and Geranium Essential Oils I’m feeling chilled just typing about it, also great to smear your scarf with too if you end up being seated by a toilet. Bad times.

Elemental Herbology Flower Harmonising Mist: With the words of Caroline Hirons swimming in my head, I ventured out the other day with the mission of locating a hydrating spritz and came home with this. Stocked with pure damask rose petals, it’s refreshing, nourishing and gives your makeup a big kick up the behind after a heavy day along with a splash of skincare advantages.

Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm: I bloody love this hand cream, so much so that my hands have slurped their way through a whole tube and are onto their second, which is unheard of for such a product category in my stash. Citrusy, non-greasy and good enough for hands, cuticles, feet, elbows and the rest. Rub over palms and cuticles when you score a seat for silky smooth mitts by the time you reach your destination.

Blistex Intensive Moisturiser Hydrating Lip Cream: As much as you were all expecting to see that grand little tub of By Terry’s Baume de Rose laid out in this lineup, I find having to get stuck-in quite literally a bit of a turn off when out and about, so I throw in this travel-friendly lip addition from Blistex instead. I slick it on straight from the nub, sparingly mind you as it can get a little creamy and opaque, for some fuss-free lip love.

CHANEL Les Beiges Healthly Glow Sheer Powder in B20: Now it’s a bit of a funny story how this came into my possession – I’ll save that for another day – but it’s here, B20, the shade I originally wanted. Yes it’s heavenly, yes it lives up to the hype and I shall bask in glory each time I click open this little touch-up compact for the whole carriage to see. A little dust before you alight at the other end and you’ll be looking even darn better than when you got on. One part magic, one part CHANEL and you’re onto a winner.

Beauty booty sorted with a quick spritz, slick, roller and rub; other suggestions for some en route entertainment? The latest copy of Allure of course, paired with Justin Timberlakes’ Justified on repeat. How 2002 of me.
