The Two Whistles Tops That Weaselled Their Way Into My Wardrobe

I mentioned in my last capsule wardrobe update that I was going to be a bit more lax with the rules this time round and let’s just say that two new purchases have weaselled their way into my wardrobe. No beating around the bush here. Side note: Isn’t ‘beating around the bush’ just such a great phrase? It always makes me chuckle. I won’t attempt to make excuses but Whistles had a 20% off promotion running, they were playing such good music in the store, one of the Sales Assistants was wearing one of the tops and looked HAWT in it and Mark and I had a photoshoot with Nadia Meli later that day and I was having one of those ‘Balls, I have nothing to wear‘ moments, which I have to say happen a lot less often these days now I have a collection of pieces in my wardrobe that are a bit more thought out and less impulsive.

Yep – these were kind of impulsive, but I love them and think of them as two great ‘smart-casual’ summer tops that I can wear with jeans and sandals for more of a BBQ-appropriate, relaxed look or with heels for a dinner and drinks OOTD. Yep, they’re both monochrome, but for once there’s a bit of arm showing going on. I know, wild.

So the first is the Cold Shoulder High Neck Top. It’s pricey for what it is (but yay – discount!), I’ve tried a load of these style of tops on and nothing fitted quite like this. There’s a pretty fold in the back too that makes it a bit different. I wore it to a BBQ the other weekend and every single one of my friends questioned me on where it was from and bagsied their claim on it if I ever decide to get rid of it (they’re all too familiar with my extreme wardrobe clear-outs and often reap the benefits before I head to the charity shop). Tough luck ladies because I have a feeling that this one will be here to stay for summers to come. I’d recommend sizing up as I found my usual size to cut a little into my arms.

My favourite though is the Imelda Fluted Sleeve Top that I’d been eyeing up since it landed on the site a couple of weeks ago and I couldn’t shake out of my head (though it’s disappeared, I can only find it available at John Lewis online). It’s even more beautiful on than I imagined and ended up being what I wore to our shoot. I’m sure our kids will look back on those pictures one day and laugh, but I will tell them that back in the day Whistles was my jam and that I bloody loved that top. The black piping gives it a bit of detail and the frill sleeves are so darn flattering. Expect this to be the next navy spotted shirt…
