Sepia-Toned Makeup: Sounds Weird, Looks Good

Back in the day I remember adding this effect called ‘Sepia’ over all of my photos before I plastered them on to MySpace. It was what VSCO Cam F2 filter is to me now. It made things look warm and slightly antique and 13 year old me thought it was so cool. Recently though I’ve revived this effect in the form of my everyday makeup, adding reddish tones and matte formulas to my eyes, lips and cheeks. Spring might be knocking on the door armed with pastel colours, but I’m feeling something slightly more out of season and autumnal. So here’s my sepia edit..

CHEEKS. Of course I’ve got to give a nod to the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium which helps leave things looking a little less blunt in the cheekbone department; but when it comes to colour I prefer a dusty, brown pink that adds extra sculpting along with an extra dose of natural colour. Too Faced’s Love Flush Long-Lasting Blush in Baby Love leans slightly peach, but Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Exposed is the ultimate ‘no blush, blush’ in my eyes (you just need a dab of it mind you because it’s seriously pigmented stuff that will last you yonks).

EYES. I’ve mentioned the Viseart Neutral Mattes Eyeshadow Palette before as one of my current everyday faves as I love the matte, but blendable formulas and the mix of beiges and browns on offer here. However if I’m feeling something with a shot of shimmer running through it then I like Charlotte Tilbury’s Luxury Palette in The Vintage Vamp which despite its deep red and seemingly unwearable appearance is surprisingly easy to don. I also have a soft spot for her Sophisticate Palette as well, which executes that whole Olivia Palermo-thang perfectly. I do love a cream eyeshadow though because they’re so easy to apply and blend and they also rate highly in the longevity stakes. Right now I’m favouriting the Estée Lauder Pure Colour Stay-On Shadow Paint in Chained (which looks like it may have been discontinued? Boo!).

LIPS. Brown lipsticks were never really on my radar till a few months ago and now I’m pretty into ’em – yellow teeth exaggerating and all. In the picture above from left to right we have MAC Lipstick in Velvet Teddy, Whirl and Mehr and the recently discontinued (boo again!BITE Beauty Luminous Lip Creme in Pepper. Velvet Teddy is a peachy, terracotta brown that is my current favourite of the four, though I do love the rosy tones of Mehr when I’m in the mood for something a little more pink. Pepper is a good everyday shade because the formula is a little more sheer and Whirl? Well I have to work myself up to Whirl (and make sure I’ve used my whitening toothpaste before, if you catch my drift..).
