Natural Nails

This week something very strange happened. I have not worn nail varnish for the whole week. Yep, gasp. At first I didn’t quite know what was going on and wished for somebody to slap me round the face and shock me back into my polish painting ways. However, 5 days down the line and I’m starting to actually quite like it – I no longer hide my hands in my pockets when out in public and my nails are definitely thanking me for this little breather.

Ok so my nails naturally aren’t awful (although my ring finger was looking particularly ragged after this whole ring finger accent business) but they did need a bit of tweaking to perfect this ‘Au Natural’ look. Firstly I cut and filled all my nails down into the square shape that I like to sport. Then I popped on some Sally Hansen Cuticle Remover gel, left it on for a few minutes and then pushed back my cuticles with a cuticle stick – this is something that I have to do every time I give myself a mini, I must have ridiculously fast growing cuticles or something. I’ve nearly finished the tube and it’s a definite repurchase – I highly recommend. Now don’t go thinking that I could go completely without nail varnish, I did cheat slightly and pop a clear polish on. I went for Seche Vite as it was the only one I had, but I would not suggest you do the same as it peels off in less than a day so your clear nail polish suggestions are welcomed πŸ™‚ A dab of any nail oil or cuticle cream you have laying around over the beds of your nails to give a little extra shine and perfecto! This was 4 days ago and after promising myself every night this week that I will get round to putting a colour on I haven’t! CBA! Although I’m feeling like either Essie Lady Like or Topless  and Barefoot will be applied this weekend – god I’m so predictable πŸ˜‰

I’ve been sporting a natural nail for about two weeks now! All that colour over Christmas made me want a break. They are starting to look a bit worse for wear now though!

    • Nice to give them a break πŸ™‚ xx

  • I had the same peeling problem with Seche Vite, so I switched to Sally Hansen Insta-dry which definitely lasts longer! Not as glassy a finish but no peeling at all x

    • Will give that a go πŸ™‚ xx

  • I love Nail colour too…i should let my nails “breathe” haha

  • Sometimes I feel proud of myself for not putting any nail polish on for a week. (This only usually happens during stressed coursework periods).  The Barry M 3in1  is pretty good to just use on it’s own. It doesn’t peel at all for me. πŸ™‚

    • Haha thanks for the recommendation! xx

Any of th OPI Nail Envy products work well as a clear polish choice, plus they strengthen your nails in the process!

  • Chloe Knight

I can’t wear nail polish as I work as a waitress and do beauty in college so for both its forbidden! But I know that letting your nails ‘breathe’ can work wonders and really help with nail conditions and plus they look so much more healthy:)

    lovely post

    • You crazy cat you, trust you to currently be sporting a Chanel πŸ˜‰ xx

  • Amy

I only wear polish at the weekend when I’m working as a teacher, I definitely know the benefits of letting them breathe!

    • It’s nice to leave them au natural every now and again πŸ™‚ xx

  • gabrielle_rosanne

I need to resist painting my nails so often, it’s really bad if you continuously paint them! I recommend Essie’s Millionails for a good clear polish to use on it’s own, because it really does your nails good too! Worth investing in πŸ™‚ x

    • Thanks for the recommendation! xx

  • Oh la la cherie

Lovely hands! Mine right now are a total mess πŸ™

    • Thanks hun – treat them to a pamper! xx

  • Sarah Harrison

The best clear nail varnish I’ve used is Crystal Clear from Natural Collection. Cheap and long lasting (:

I recommend the Barry M base coat, top coat and nail hardener (all in one) its fairly good and its so affordable and leaves a nice sheen to the nails.

Great post, although i never leave my nails bare, i hate them haha.

I love leaving my nails bare and just looking after them. I think that’s because my nails are naturally very strong and long. (It rhymes, haha) πŸ™‚

Love this post! I’ve also been going nail polish free lately although I’m considering a sneaky Beauty Bar order of Topless and Barefoot (need in life). When I go ‘nail polish free’ I like to apply two coats of the Rimmel Stronger base coat polish. It seriously strengthens nails and keeps them rock hard and near unbreakable without any other colour on top x

  • Good ol’ Rimmel clear polish is great πŸ™‚ If you can find the one that isn’t designed to be a top coat. Just the regular nail polish πŸ™‚
I need to buy myself some cuticle remover. I can never find any though!! Where did you get the Sally Hansen one from?

    • I got it from Boots πŸ™‚ xx

  • Mabel Bagel

I like this look!  I hardly ever paint my nails, but I buff and shine them and then put a clear coat over them.

  • Amy

i love this post. while im at dance college in the week, im not allowed to wear coloured nail polish. so this has given me a good idea on what to do to make my nails look a littly more presentable. did you get the cuticle remover cream at boots? i feel like i have fast growing cuticles aswell, which sounds odd.and is even more odd when my actual nails take weeks to grow xo

    • Yes I get the cuticle remover from Boots πŸ™‚ xx

  • HollysSecret

I find that the Sally Hansen growth/repair clear strengthening treatment nail varnishes are great when going for an almost ‘au natural’ look πŸ™‚ great for giving your nails much needed TLC. Perfect for us nail polish addicts! πŸ™‚ x

    • Sounds like they need a bit of TLC πŸ™‚ xx

  • Mrs. Cole

Essie 3-Way Glaze is amazing!!!! It holds any polish. I've tried a ton and bought this one on a whim. I was pleasantly surprised with it. My nail color does not chip for at least 5 days using it.

i cant remember the last time i had bare nails… it scares me and i feel ashamed haha πŸ˜€

  • MyLushBoxBarbz

So weird I read this! I stopped wearing nail varnish two days ago for the first time in ages and I had no idea how dry and dull my nails were! I’ve been rubbing argan oil and olive oil into them when I’m watching tv and after two days they feel so strong and look so shiny! I am missing the colour though and I’m scared they will break!
