Bourjois Java Rice Powder

I’m a bit of a sucker for a slice of beauty history. In fact my first stop when I last visited The Science Museum was the section dedicated to makeup relics from the past – #MakeupNerd. So when I spotted this vintage looking compact from Bourjois my eyes lit up in the aisles of Boots. Available at all Bourjois stockists now, for just under a tenner, the Java Rice Powder a re-release and re-formula of a product that hit the beauty market almost 150 years ago. Say what?

It’s one of those products that warrants a purchase on packaging and history alone, but you know what? The product housed inside, under a spin and release wheel is pretty good too. A pinky hued powder, with a touch of shimmer that brightens the complexion with one quick sweep over the high points (though you may wish to use a light hand with this or things can get a wee bit glowy). It actually reminds me of a slightly less refined and loose version of a Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder. The shade Mood Light to be exact. Both have that ‘finishing powder/highlighter hybrid’ quality. But if you just wish to gaze at it lovingly on your dressing table, I get ya girl. I’ll be doing the same.

I love this, it’s so pretty and smells just like I remember my mums dressing table to smell when I was a kid playing with her make-up!

  • I love the packaging! But I really don’t like working with loose powder products. I might well buy it just to stare at it though haha.

  • I am not a loose powder fan, but I fell massively for the whole ‘history’ aspect of the product – I mean how cool is it that they have lasted for 150 years, let alone reusing/remarketing one of their original products?! Mind. Blown. The packaging is super cute too – in a way I wish Bourjois would make the rest of their packaging similar x

  • Allison

I’ve never tried a loose powder highlighter, looks amazing! I would look at it all day!

  • Tarte Tanya

  • Hannah Burrows

I adore the packaging so much however I’m a bit scared of anything glowy due to my oily skin 🙁

  • GeorginaTheLibrarian

This may never get used due to the sparkes, but it will look awesome sitting as a little vintage knick knack on my shelves. Thanks for spotting it!

  • rebekka T

I hate the product itself (not long lasting at all, the first time I swatched it I could wipe it off easily and all that was left was glitter) but the packaging is really nice, I’ll give you that 🙂

  • Ishaba

Anna, I wish you’d post pictures of the products being used on your face. It’s hard to get the full effect of a product if you don’t show us how they look against your skin.

  • Tanaya J

I really like what I’ve been seeing and reading about this Powder!

  • Lauren

My mum has just found the original powder that this new one is based on which was made in 1877 in mint condition!!! We’re trying to figure out if it’s worth anything lol 🙂
