A Flash Of Red? My Unexpected Summer Colour Crush

So we might still be in August, but already I’m hankering after some autumnal makeup vibes. If I had to pick a beauty season that I felt most at home with it would definitely be autumn, as much I do like the berry lips that come back every darn year with winter and the golden lids ‘Victoria Secrets model’ phase that rolls around every summer. The rusty tones, subtle matte textures and the Olsen-twins look that they don year round that kicks in trend-wise around September time, gets me every damn year.

Screw the corals and shimmery bronzes and golds, I’m making a headstart on my rouged-up beauty stash and have been dropping in autumnal hints for the past few weeks. A rosy lipgloss here and an earthy matte eyeshadow palette there. Thankfully there have been some new releases that helped the process along, but there’s a trusty ol’ fave in there too. I’ll talk you through…

CHANEL are dropping a beefy set of launches as part of their Le Rouge Collection and it all heads out onto counter today – RUN FOREST, RUN. There’s a bit of everything but there are three items in particular that have got me hot under the collar – the Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eyeshadow in Candeur et Experience, the Stylo Jeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Eros and the Le Vernis Nail Gloss in Rouge Radical.

The eyeshadow palette is actually the first ever fully-matte quad that CHANEL have released and it’s bloomin’ beautiful. The three browns are all warm and work gorgeously all over the lid and as crease colours and the terracotta red is deep, whilst being blendable and smudgey. I personally like the palest brown from the top right of the palette blended all over the lid and crease with a bit of the red worked into the centre of the lid and a smudge of the eyeliner across the outer third of my top lash line. The liner is a rich metallic burgundy and a nice alternative for someone like myself who doesn’t stray too far from brown in the kohl department. It’s what I’m wearing in the picture above and it’s what I’ve been reaching for whenever I’m in the mood to actually dig into my makeup box.

Whilst we’re on the subject of CHANEL I’ve got to talk about this Nail Gloss. Have a look at it in the bottle. It’s a see-through formula with a hint of red to it, right? Pop it onto the nail and it transfers into an almost opaque orange-tinted red right in front of your eyes. It’s practically magic. I’ve never had so much fun painting my nails. To say that it’s semi-opaque is a bit of a disservice as with two coats it’s about 95% of the way there. Think of it like a stain glass window finish for your nails. It dries ridiculously glossy and it’s a fun product to use. If CHANEL made a taupe colour in this formula I don’t think I’d ever use another nail polish ever again.

In terms of lips, I’m still having a nude phase mainly because I’m pretty low-maintenance and can never be bothered to reapply things once I’ve eaten 10 cookies and the grease has pulled the colour off, however there are two red options that are tempting me back to the dark side – the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in 12 and the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl. The Clarins is obviously the sheerer of the two – you know the drill by now – and then the NARS is for when I’m feeling bold. This colour is a classic. Matte, but not too drying and easy to apply. In fact I’ve shifted away from liquid lipsticks and back to the NARS pencils because you still get the same finish but without feeling like you’ve applied sand to your lips.

So there you have it, an unexpected colour crush for this time of year, but sod it. I ain’t ever gonna stop lusting after those Mary-Kate and Ashley makeup vibes.
